Orchid I. Jordan
Orchid Irene (née Ramsey) Jordan (August 17, 1910 – December 25, 1995) was an American politician. Born in Clay Center, Kansas, she graduated from Wilberforce University in Ohio in 1932 with a degree in elementary education. Ramsey married Leon Jordan on August 15, 1932. Leon Jordan served in the Missouri House of Representatives and was assassinated on July 15, 1970. Orchid Jordan succeeded her husband and then served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1970 to 1984. She was initially a representative for Jackson county district 11 then 25 and 28. Jordan was a Democrat and lived in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a charter member of Freedom, Inc., a voting rights organization which her husband co-founded. She became a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was also a member of the National Urban League. Clay Center is a city in and the county seat of Clay County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 4,199. History Clay Center was first settled in 1862. It was named from its position near the geographical center of Clay County. The first post office was established in Clay Center on July 3, 1862. The African-American upper class is a social class that consists of African-American individuals who have high disposable incomes and high net worth. The group may include highly paid white-collar professionals such as academics, engineers, lawyers, accountants, doctors, politicians, business executives, venture capitalists, CEOs, celebrities, entertainers, entrepreneurs and heirs. Wilberforce University
Wilberforce University is a private historically black university in Wilberforce, Ohio. Affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), it was the first college to be owned and operated by African Americans. It participates in the United Negro College Fund. Central State University, also in Wilberforce, Ohio, began as a department of Wilberforce University where Ohio state legislators could sponsor scholarship students. The college was founded in 1856 by a unique collaboration between the Cincinnati, Ohio, Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) to provide classical education and teacher training for black youth.
