Orange-peel Doris
''Acanthodoris lutea'', the orange-peel doris, is a species of nudibranch or sea slug, a shell-less marine opisthobranch gastropod mollusk in the family Onchidorididae. This species is the largest of the northeastern Pacific onchidorids.Behrens D.W., 1980, ''Pacific Coast Nudibranchs: a guide to the opisthobranchs of the northeastern Pacific'', Sea Challenger Books, Washington, 112pp., p. 48. It is a common species, and it is very noticeable because of its bright coloration, which is aposematic. The species name "''lutea''" is a Latin word which means an orange-yellow color. The generic name, "''acantho''" comes from the Greek word meaning spiny, and "'' doris''" is the name of an ancient Greek sea nymph. Description This nudibranch grows to about 30 mm in length. Frank Mace MacFarland (1869–1951) was an American malacologist associated with Stanford University in California. Born in Centralia, Illinois, MacFarland attended DePauw University (A.B. 1889), Stanford University (A.M., 1893) and the University of Wurzburg (PhD, 1896). On August 27, 1902, MacFarland married Olive Knowles Hornbrook (b.30 June 1872, West Virginia; B.L. 1893, Ohio Wesleyan University; A.B. 1908, Stanford; d. 1 May 1962, San Mateo, California). Mrs. MacFarland was a skilled technician and artist whose delicate watercolor paintings illustrated many of his scientific publications. 16 S ribosomal RNA (or 16 S rRNA) is the RNA component of the 30S subunit of a prokaryotic ribosome (SSU rRNA). It binds to the Shine-Dalgarno sequence and provides most of the SSU structure.
