Oran McPherson
Oran Leo "Tony" McPherson (April 12, 1886 – May 23, 1949) was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta (Canada) for Little Bow from 1921 to 1935 as a member of the United Farmers of Alberta.Perry, Footz 2006 pg. 295, 303 Early life He was born in Kingman, Kansas, United States in 1886 and attended the University of Illinois before moving to Alberta in 1906. Political career He served as speaker of the assembly from 1922 to 1926. He also later served as the Minister of Public Works. In 1932, he had a nasty divorce that made headlines across Alberta newspapers. This was one of the events that hurt the United Farmers and gave them the reputation of being afflicted by moral decay that would help lead the party to its demise in 1935 at the hands of Social Credit Social credit is a distributive philosophy of political economy developed by C. Peter Dawson (Alberta Politician)
Peter Dawson (April 11, 1892 – March 24, 1963) was a Canadian minister and politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Dawson was born in 1892 in Scotland. After attending schools and briefly working as a labourer and an apprentice to a butcher in Maybole, Dawson immigrated to Canada at the age of 18 with his brother, James Dawson. Shortly after arriving, he took up residence in Ontario where he worked in the automobile profession for seven years until moving west to Alberta in 1918. Following his decision to settle in Calgary, he found employment as a butcher and interest in missionary work. His residence in Calgary, however, didn't last long, as five years later, he moved to the nearby capital city of Edmonton, where he attended Prebysterian schooling. Ordained as a minister of the United Church in 1927, he soon was called in 1928 to Sedgewick, where he remained for two years, before getting called to Champion. James McNaughton (March 10, 1864 – January 1, 1959) was a Canadian politician and former member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from Alberta. Political career James was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Little Bow for the Alberta Liberal Party in a hotly contested race against popular southern Alberta merchant John T. McDonald in the 1913 Alberta general election. 1913 election The 1913 Little Bow election became bitter and scandal-plagued after campaign workers of Conservative rival John T. McDonald were arrested without charge and detained until after the election. The Calgary Herald claimed it was caused by "Siftonism" running rampant through the province. In that same election the Liberals were also accused of gerrymandering Little Bow to be very liberal-friendly. 1917 election James was easily re-elected in a landslide in the 1917 Alberta general election. Alberta Social Credit was a provincial political party in Alberta, Canada, that was founded on social credit monetary policy put forward by Clifford Hugh Douglas and on conservative Christian social values. The Canadian social credit movement was largely an out-growth of Alberta Social Credit. The Social Credit Party of Canada was strongest in Alberta, before developing a base in Quebec when Réal Caouette agreed to merge his Ralliement créditiste movement into the federal party. The British Columbia Social Credit Party formed the government for many years in neighbouring British Columbia, although this was effectively a coalition of centre-right forces in the province that had no interest in social credit monetary policies.
