National Exhibition Centre
The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) is an exhibition centre located in Marston Green, Solihull, West Midlands, England. It is near junction 6 of the M42 motorway, and is adjacent to Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International railway station. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1976. History The NEC was originally going to be built adjacent to the M1 motorway (junction 21) near Leicester but it was turned down by Leicestershire County Council with claims that "The big shows won't move away from London". The building was designed by Edward Mills. In November 1971, the Secretary of State for the Environment granted outline planning approval for the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Arriva Shires & Essex is a bus operator providing services in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex and Hertfordshire, with services extending to Oxfordshire and Greater London. Until 2002 its operations included Colchester. It is a subsidiary of Arriva UK Bus. Operations are split between two registered companies, Arriva East Herts & Essex Limited and Arriva The Shires Limited. Coventry Park And Ride
Coventry Park and Ride is a park and ride system, operated under contract to Coventry City Council and Transport for West Midlands, in the English city of Coventry. The scheme was launched in 1999 to relieve traffic congestion and to provide a cheaper alternative to city centre parking. The service was jointly operated by Coventry City Council, Centro and Travel de Courcey, with Centro and Coventry City Council jointly responsible for the marketing and setting fares. Buses shuttled passengers between a large free carpark at Austin Drive, Courthouse Green, to and from the city centre. In June 2012 Travel de Courcey introduced three electric buses to the route, each with a capacity of 40 passengers. Travel De Courcey
Travel de Courcey was a bus and coach operator based near Coventry in the West Midlands region of England. It operated local bus services in the Coventry and Warwickshire area and National Express contracts. History Mike de Courcey Travel was founded in 1972 by Mike de Courcey. It expanded into bus service operations after the Transport Act 1985 deregulated the UK bus industry. In June 2011, Mike de Courcey Travel took over the Birmingham depot of Veolia Transport and several National Express contracts from them. In April 2017 Mike de Courcey Travel was awarded the Queen's Awards for Enterprise in the sustainable development category. On 24 August 2020, the operator fell into administration, citing a steep decline of passenger numbers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Electric Bus
An electric bus is a bus that is propelled using electric motors as opposed to an internal combustion engine. Electric buses can store the needed electricity on-board, or be fed continuously from an external source. The majority of buses storing electricity are battery electric buses (which this article mostly deals with), where the electric motor obtains energy from an onboard battery pack, although examples of other storage modes do exist, such as the gyrobus which uses flywheel energy storage. When electricity is not stored on board, it is supplied by contact with outside power sources. For example, overhead wires as in the trolleybus, or with a ground-level power supply, or through inductive charging. As of 2019, 99% of all battery electric buses in the world have been deployed in Mainland China, with more than 421,000 buses on the road, which is 17% of China's total bus fleet. Maytree Travel
Maytree Travel was a bus operator based in Bolton in Greater Manchester. History The company was formed in 2008 by owner Gary Hawthorne, who took over the Bolton operations of Tyrer Bus, who first started operating in Bolton in 2007. The company had over 35 routes and ran in the Bolton and Wigan areas. Several of its services were run on behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester, including Bolton's Metroshuttle service, which Maytree ran from January 2010 until December 2012. On 1 March 2013, Manchester Community Transport acquired Maytree for an undisclosed figure, with Maytree becoming a trading subsidy of MCT. Despite the takeover, Maytree Travel services were suspended on 4 April 2013 with replacements for tendered services obtained by Transport for Greater Manchester. The system was first introduced in Manchester city centre in 2002, with three routes linking the city's major thoroughfares and stations with its main commercial, financial and cultural districts.
