FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships
The FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships, or more commonly "Open Water Worlds", was a bi-annual FINA championship for open water swimming held in even years from 2000 to 2010, inclusive. Race distances were 5, 10, and 25 kilometers (also known as 5K, 10K, and 25K). The 10 km race at the 2008 edition served as the main qualifying event for the 2008 Olympics 10 km event. Editions Twelve editions were part of the World Aquatics Championships, and six edition were ''stand alone'' editions. From 2011 the biannual event is included only into the World Aquatics Championships. Stand alone editions The Open Water Worlds were held in the years between the FINA's main World Championships, providing an annual championships for Open Water Swimming. Yevgeny Yuryevich Drattsev (also Evgeny Drattsev, russian: Евгений Юрьевич Дратцев; born 24 January 1983) is a Russian swimmer, who specialized in open water marathon. He is considered one of the fastest professional open water swimmers in the world, finishing near the top of FINA World Cup races for the 10 km marathon. He also won two medals (silver and bronze) for the 5 and 10 km open water marathon at the 2007 FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Biography Drattsev qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, after placing fifth from the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships in Seville, Spain. He swam in the first ever men's 10 km open water marathon, against a field of 24 other competitors, including former pool swimmers Petar Stoychev of Bulgaria and Thomas Lurz of Germany, and his teammate Vladimir Dyatchin. Mario Sanzullo (born 5 June 1993) is an Italian open water swimmer who won two medals at the World Championships. He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in 10 km open water. Marc-Antoine Olivier (born 18 June 1996) is a French competitive swimmer who specialises in long-distance open water events. Career Olivier's father and brother were both swimmers, which inspired him to take up the sport as well. He began swimming when he was seven in Denain, France, and he began open-water swimming at the age of fifteen. At the 2015 World Aquatics Championships he finished 6th in the 10 km open water, which qualified him for the Olympic marathon. Eric Hedlin
Eric Hedlin (born April 18, 1993) is a Canadian long-distance swimmer. Hedlin won a silver medal in the men's open water 5 km swim at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships. Career Hedlin began his notable international career competing in Randy Bennett's Victoria Swim Academy that also includes major Canadian World and Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane who is also a long distance swimmer. As a member of the Canadian swim team he won a bronze medal at the 2013 Summer Universiade in the men's 800 m freestyle. Hedlin qualified for the 2013 World Aquatics Championships by finishing 16th at the FINA World Cup event in Cancun Mexico in April of that year. This put him into the 5 km race where he was in a dogfight with former World Champion Thomas Lurz and Olympic champion Oussama Mellouli. Oussama "Ous" Mellouli ( ar, أسامة الملولي; born 16 February 1984) is a Tunisian swimmer who competes in the freestyle and medley events. He is a three-time Olympic medalist, is an African record holder, and trains with the USC Trojans team based at the University of Southern California, where he studied as a computer science undergraduate and swam collegiately. Since returning from an Adderall-related drugs ban, Oussama Mellouli has been the 1500 m freestyle World champion at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships with a winning time of 14:37.28, then the second-best performance of all time. Mellouli was the gold medalist in the 1500 freestyle at the 2008 Olympics, the bronze medalist in the 1500 freestyle at the 2012 Olympics, and the gold medalist in the 10 km marathon swim at the 2012 Olympics.
