Open Water Swimming
Open water swimming is a swimming discipline which takes place in outdoor bodies of water such as open oceans, lakes, and rivers. The beginning of the modern age of open water human swimming, swimming is sometimes taken to be May 3, 1810, when Lord Byron swam several miles to cross the Dardanelles, Hellespont (now known as the Dardanelles) from Europe to Asia. In the first edition of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, the swimming competition was held in open water. In 2000, the Olympic Games first included a triathlon with a 1500 m swim leg, and in 2008, a Swimming at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon 10 kilometre, 10 km open water swim. Ana Marcela Cunha
Ana Marcela Jesus Soares da Cunha (born 23 March 1992) is a Brazilian swimmer who specializes in the open water swimming marathon. She is considered one of the best open water swimmers in history, having obtained 14 medals in FINA World Aquatics Championships (including seven gold medals as of 2022). She has also received FINA’s Female World Open Water Swimmer Of The Year award six times (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019). Her countless achievements are comparable only to those of Larisa Ilchenko, another multi-medalist in World Championships. Cunha won the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the women's marathon 10 km. 2011 World Aquatics Championships
The 14th FINA World Championships () were held on 16–31 July 2011 in Shanghai, China at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. The 2011 World Championships featured five aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, open water, and synchronized swimming. At this championships, synchronized swimmer Natalia Ishchenko, of Russia, was the most decorated competitor winning all six gold medals of her events, at solo, duet and team routines. These championships served as qualifying stages for the 2012 Summer Olympics. FINA announced Shanghai as the host on 24 March 2007, over other finalist Doha, Qatar. Ky Hurst (born 11 March 1981) is an Australian swimmer and Ironman (surf lifesaving), ironman. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Swimming at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon 10 kilometre, 10km marathon swimming event and finished in 11th place, after qualifying by finishing fifth at the 2008 International Swimming Federation, FINA World Open Water Swimming Championship. Hurst was one of the first Australian athletes to gain selection for the 2012 London Olympics by placing fifth at the 2011 World Open Water Swimming Championships. Sean Ryan (born August 13, 1992) is an American competition swimmer who specializes in long-distance and open-water freestyle events. Personal Ryan is a 2010 graduate of The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He swam with the Scenic City Aquatic Club, a USA Swimming program, and The McCallie School, under coach Stan Corcoran. He was a member of the National Junior Team and qualified for the National Open Water Team in 2008.
