OpSail
Operation Sail refers to a series of sailing events held to celebrate special occasions and features sailing vessels from around the world. Each event is coordinated by Operation Sail, Inc., a non-profit organization established in 1961 by U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and must be approved by the United States Congress. Often referred to as OpSail or Op Sail, the event has the goals of promoting good will and cooperation between countries while providing sail training and celebrating maritime history. It is also sometimes erroneously referred to as "Tall Ships". While the tall ships form the centerpiece of the event, smaller sailing vessels also participate. Op Sail events, when scheduled, are run concurrently with the annual International Naval Review, which features present-day warships from various navies. ARA Libertad (Q-2)
ARA ''Libertad'' (Q-2) is a steel-hulled, full-rigged, class "A" sailing ship that serves as a school vessel in the Argentine Navy. One of the largest and fastest tall ships in the world, holder of several speed records, she was designed and built in the 1950s by the Río Santiago Shipyard, Ensenada, Argentina. Her maiden voyage was in 1961, and she continues to be a training ship with yearly instruction trips for the graduating naval cadets as well as a traveling goodwill ambassador, having covered more than across all seas, visited about 500 ports in more than 60 countries, and trained more than 11,000 navy graduates. USCGC Eagle (WIX-327)
USCGC ''Eagle'' (WIX-327), formerly the ''Horst Wessel'' and also known as the Barque ''Eagle'', is a barque used as a training United States Coast Guard Cutter, cutter for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. She is one of only two active commissioned sailing vessels in the United States military today, along with which is ported in Boston Harbor. She is the seventh Coast Guard cutter to bear the name in a line dating back to 1792, including the USRC Eagle, Revenue Cutter ''Eagle''. Each summer, ''Eagle'' deploys with cadets from the United States Coast Guard Academy and candidates from the Officer Candidate School for periods ranging from a week to two months. Frank Braynard
Francis Osborn Braynard (August 21, 1916 – December 10, 2007) was a prominent American author and maritime historian. Life Born Francis Osborn Braynard in Glen Cove, New York, he earned an undergraduate degree in history from Duke University in 1939, and master's degree in maritime history from Columbia University. Along with Nils Hansell, Braynard launched the world's first Operation Sail, an extravaganza in which tall ships and naval vessels filled New York harbor, in 1964. He was chief organizer for OpSail 76, marking the bicentennial of the United States of America. Braynard was also one of the creators of South Street Seaport, a complex of shops and urban amenities built in several blocks of old waterfront buildings on the East River in New York City. ''Christian Radich'' is a Norwegian full-rigged ship, named after a Norwegian shipowner. The vessel was built at Framnæs shipyard in Sandefjord, Norway, and was delivered on 17 June 1937. The owner was The Christian Radich Sail Training Foundation established by a grant from an officer of that name. Description The vessel is a full-rigged steel hull, 62.5 m long, with an overall length of 73 m including the bowsprit and a maximum width of 9.7 m. KRI Dewaruci
KRI ''Dewaruci'' (sometimes spelled ''Dewa Ruci'' or ''Dewarutji'') is a Class A tall ship and the only barquentine owned and operated by the Indonesian Navy. She is used as a sail training vessel for naval cadets and is the largest tall ship in the Indonesian fleet. ''Dewaruci'' also serves as a goodwill ambassador for Indonesia to the rest of the world. Built in Germany by H. C. Stülcken Sohn at Steinwerder, Hamburg. Gorch Fock (1958)
The ''Gorch Fock'' is a tall ship of the German Navy (''Deutsche Marine''), built in 1958 as a replacement for the original '' Gorch Fock'' built in 1933 which was taken as war reparations by the Soviet Union after World War II, renamed Tovarishch, and returned to Germany in 2003. Both ships are named in honour of the German writer Johann Kinau who wrote under the pseudonym "Gorch Fock" and died in the battle of Jutland/Skagerrak in 1916. The modern-day ''Gorch Fock'' was built in 1958 as a delayed sister ship to five ships built in the 1930s, and has since then undertaken 146 cruises (as of October 2006), including one tour around the world in 1988. ''Sea Cloud'' is a sailing cruise ship owned by Sea Cloud Cruises of Hamburg, Germany.
