Ontario Open
The Ontario Open is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour Canada that is held in Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1923 and held every year through 1979, when the Peter Jackson Tour ended. After a long hiatus, an attempted revival in 1989 lasted only one year before the tournament returned for a five year run from 1992 to 1996, during which it was sponsored by the town of Newmarket, Ontario in the first year and then by Export "A" cigarettes. Another lengthy hiatus followed until the tournament returned as a non-tour event in 2019. The following year, it rejoined the tour schedule. Cataraqui Golf and Country Club is a private golf and curling club located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1917. History Early golf in Kingston, the Kingston Golf Club Cataraqui G&CC was established in 1917. Its founding arose from development pressures in downtown Kingston. The new club was built on land that was then on the western edge of settlement for the city and district, following the World War I-era construction of the LaSalle Causeway and provincial highway, across the Cataraqui River as it feeds into Lake Ontario, in downtown Kingston. This new highway also crossed the property used by the Kingston Golf Club, disrupting the flow of play there. Gary Cowan
Gary Cowan (born October 28, 1938) is a Canadian golfer who has achieved outstanding results at the highest class in amateur competition. Biography Cowan was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. He began to play golf at the municipal golf course, Rockway, in Kitchener, and found great rivalries there with such excellent players as Moe Norman and Gerry Kesselring. The three were coached by Lloyd Tucker. Cowan reached the semi-finals of the Ontario Amateur Championship at age 17 in 1956, a record for a player so young. He won the 1956 Canadian Junior Championship. His first national championship victory at men's level was the 1961 Canadian Amateur Championship, which was to be his only win, but he reached the finals on four other occasions (1959, 1960, 1964, 1968), and finished second at stroke play twice more (1974, 1978).
