Onizuka AFS
Onizuka Air Force Station or Onizuka AFS was a United States Air Force installation in Sunnyvale, California, at the intersection of California State Route 237, State Route 237 and North Mathilda Avenue. It was operational from 1960 to 2010. Its distinguishing feature was Building 1003, known locally as the Blue Cube or simply the "Cube" given its size, color, and lack of windows. The station's other distinguishing features were its three primary parabolic dish antennas used for communication with Air Force Satellite Control Network#Current Remote Tracking Stations, remote tracking stations used to control military satellites; these antennas were named Sun East, Sun West, and Sun 3. 750th Space Group
The United States Air Force's 750th Space Group was a space operations unit located at Onizuka Air Force Station, California. its predecessor was formed on 1 October 1987; it assumed the designation of the 750th Space Group on 30 January 1992; and it was inactivated on 25 June 1999. History The 750 SG inactivated in June 1999, following the recommendation of the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. Primary responsibilities for the Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) mission transferred to the 22d Space Operations Squadron, 50th Operations Group, 50th Space Wing, Schriever AFB, Colorado and Air Force support to Space Shuttle missions transferred to the 21st Space Operations Squadron, 50th Operations Group, 50th Space Wing, which stood up at Onizuka AFS. 50th Space Wing
The 50th Space Wing was the United States Space Force's space and cyber warfare wing. The 50th Space Wing was assigned to Space Operations Command and headquartered at Schriever Air Force Base. It was activated in 1949 as the 50th Fighter Wing, serving as a reserve air defense unit, and was redesignated as the 50th Fighter-Interceptor Wing in 1950, before being inactivated in 1951. It was reactivated in 1953 as the 50th Fighter-Bomber Wing, deploying to Europe to join NATO forces, and was redesignated as the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1958. The wing operated for almost 40 years at Hahn Air Base in West Germany. In 1981 it became the first USAF overseas formation to operate the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon jet. Geographically Separate Unit
In the United States military a Geographically Separate Unit (GSU) is a base that is physically separate from, yet not autonomous of its "parent" base. GSUs are "owned" by their parent organization and are typically quite small. Assignment to a GSU can be a mixed blessing. The distance from the parent organization means a more relaxed atmosphere. However, it also means that members assigned to the GSU have to travel to the "parent" base for most military services such as the Commissary, Base exchange, or Personnel Unit.
