One Scotland Gazetteer
The One Scotland Gazetteer is the definitive national land, property and address dataset for Scotland that is published bwithin the Improvement Service. It is compiled using information from all 32 Scottish councils and produced to common standards and specification. It is not to be confused with the Royal Mail Postcode Address File (PAF) which is only a list of mail delivery locations. The Improvement Service Spatial Information Service also manageTellmescotland( portal for accessing public information notices issued by local authorities across Scotland) and thSpatial Hub- which compiles and publishes other local authority spatial datasets. History In 2000, the Scottish Executive (now Scottish Government) set up a Modernising Government Fund to improve public services. Scottish Councils
Local government in Scotland comprises thirty-two local authorities, commonly referred to as councils. Each council provides public services, including education, social care, waste management, libraries and planning. Councils receive the majority of their funding from the Scottish Government, but operate independently and are accountable to their local electorates. Councils raise additional income via the Council Tax, a locally variable domestic property tax, and Business rates, a non-domestic property tax. Councils are made up of councillors who are directly elected by the residents of the area they represent. Each council area is divided into a number of wards, and three or four councillors are elected for each ward. There are currently 1,227 elected councillors in Scotland. European Data Portal
On November 16, 2015 the beta version of the European Data Portal was launched. The European Data Portal is an initiative of the European Commission, and is part of the Digital Single Market. Purpose The European Data Portal was created to gather Public Sector Information of the 28 European Member States and the four EFTA countries. These countries are also referred to as the EU28+. Public Sector Information that can be freely re-use for any purpose is commonly referred to as Open Data. The EU28+ countries publish public data on national data portals and geospatial portals. In order to provide one single access point to all of this data, the European Data Portal was created. On the portal, only metadata (data about the data) is shown. This metadata is directly harvested from the existing portals through the use of APIs.
