Omaha City Council
The City Council of Omaha, Nebraska, is elected every four years on a nonpartisan basis. The next election will occur in 2025. Omaha has a strong mayor form of government. Members are elected by district. Currently seven city council districts are represented across the City of Omaha. Membership City council members represented seven districts throughout the city of Omaha. The City Council is officially nonpartisan; party affiliations are for informational purposes only. However, registered Democrats hold a majority. Additional seats In 2006 the Nebraska State Legislature began deliberations on adding additional seats to the Omaha City Council. Due to the annexation of Elkhorn by Omaha, the City Council has proposed new boundaries for the districts that would split Elkhorn between two districts. Jean Stothert
Jean Louise Stothert (née Wolf; born February 7, 1954) is an American politician and former nurse serving as the 51st mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. She is the first woman to hold the office and was sworn in as Mayor on June 10, 2013. She was re-elected on May 10, 2017, and May 11, 2021. Personal life Jean Stothert was born on February 7, 1954, in Wood River, Illinois. She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Seattle Pacific University. Stothert married Joe Stothert in 1981. He became a critical care surgery specialist at the Nebraska Medical Center. The couple had two children, and were married until Joe Stothert died at age 72. In May, 2022 she married Dr. J. Jim Suttle
James H. Suttle (born June 13, 1944) is an American corporate executive, engineer, and politician who served as the 50th mayor of Omaha, Nebraska from 2009 to 2013. Earlier career Suttle held the position of vice-chair of the Board of Directors for the Omaha-based engineering and design firm HDR, Inc. He also served as executive vice president and director of corporate development for HDR. Lormong Lo
Lormong Lo (1959 – July 19, 2011) was the first Hmong American to be appointed to a city council in the U.S, in June 1994, where he managed the largest metropolitan city (Omaha—480,000 people) in the state of Nebraska. He replaced Joe Friend, who resigned. in June 1997, Lo was elected to a second term of four years. That same June, Lo was the first Hmong ever to become president of a city council. He was also the first Hmong American to ever hold the title of Acting Mayor, starting in June 1997. His second term was marked by boldness and controversy, when in 1998 he used his authority as Acting Mayor to negotiate a settlement with the firefighters' union over their labor contract and pending lawsuit, while Mayor Hal Daub was out of town. Brenda Council
Brenda J. Council (born 1953 or 1954) is a politician and a disbarred labor lawyer from North Omaha, Nebraska. She represented the 11th District in the Nebraska State Legislature from 2009 to 2013, succeeding longtime state senator Ernie Chambers, who was term-limited. She lost her 2012 reelection bid to Chambers, who was able to run for the seat again after sitting out one term. The same year, she pleaded guilty to misuse of campaign funds, for which she was disbarred in 2014. Lee Raymond Terry (born January 29, 1962) is a former American politician and a senior law firm adviser. From 1999 to 2015, he served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for as a member of the Republican Party. Walt Calinger
Walter M. Calinger (born January 2, 1940) is a former lawyer, former mayor of Omaha and education official. Political career Walter Calinger was a member of the Omaha City Council and served as the 45th mayor of Omaha, Nebraska from April 20, 1988 to June 5, 1989. He was appointed by the city council after the death of Mayor Bernie Simon. Betty Abbott
Betty Abbott was the first female city council member of Omaha, Nebraska. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, and was inducted into its hall of fame. She became a member of the Omaha city council in 1965 and stayed a member until 1977. In 1973 she was named the Omaha World-Herald's "Midlander of the Year." In 1975 she was elected to lead the League of Nebraska Municipalities. She went to City Hall on December 30, 1975, in a sweater that read, "Omaha City Council. Creighton University
Creighton University is a private Jesuit research university in Omaha, Nebraska. Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1878, the university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
