Varenna
Varenna (Comasco, Lecchese: ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) on Lake Como in the Province of Lecco in the Italian region Lombardy, located about north of Milan and about northwest of Lecco. Varenna was founded by local fishermen in 769, and was later allied with the commune of Milan. In 1126 it was destroyed by the rival commune of Como, and later received the refugees from the Isola Comacina, who had met the same fate (1169). Mandello del Lario (Lecchese: ) is an Italian town and ''comune'' in the province of Lecco, in Lombardy, on Lake Como. Since 1921, Mandello del Lario has been home to Moto Guzzi—the Italian motorcycle manufacturer, now a subsidiary of Piaggio & Co. SpA. The town each year since 2001 has hosted GMG (a.k.a. Giornata Mondiale Guzzi or Worldwide Guzzi Days). The Grigna massif is located in Mandello's communal territory. Saint George's church Saint George's church has a single hall with a visible truss ceiling and a quadrangular apse with a cross-vaulted ceiling. Lierna is a ''comune'' in the province of Lecco in Lombardy, in north-west Italy. It lies on the eastern shore of Lake Como, about north of Milan and about north-west of Lecco. Lierna borders the comuni of Esino Lario, Mandello del Lario, Oliveto Lario and Varenna. History The first mention of Lierna dates to 854 AD, but Roman remains, including a mosaic floor now in the Palazzo Belgioioso of Lecco, attest to much earlier settlement. The name of the village may be of Roman or of Celtic origin. Between 1035 and 1202 it was a feud of the Monastery of San Dionigi in Milan. Lierna was contested between Milan and Como, and between the Della Torre and Visconti families.
