Olimpíada Brasileira De Matemática
The Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad ( pt, 'Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática', also known as OBM) is a mathematics competition held every year for students of Brazil. The participants are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in accordance with their performance. The main purpose of this competition is to help in selecting students to represent Brazil at the International Mathematical Olympiad. History The Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad has been held since 1979. On that occasion, 11 students were awarded in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, and 15 were awarded in the other categories. In 1991, the competition started to have two levels: Junior, for students with a maximum of 15 years; and Senior, for high school students. Over the years, there have been changes, such as the creation, in 2001, of the University level, with two phases. In 2017, OBM was integrated into OBMEP. International Mathematical Olympiad
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is a mathematical olympiad for pre-university students, and is the oldest of the International Science Olympiads. The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959. It has since been held annually, except in 1980. More than 100 countries, representing over 90% of the world's population, send teams of up to six students, plus one team leader, one deputy leader, and observers. The content ranges from extremely difficult algebra and pre-calculus problems to problems on branches of mathematics not conventionally covered in secondary or high school and often not at university level either, such as projective and complex geometry, functional equations, combinatorics, and well-grounded number theory, of which extensive knowledge of theorems is required. Olimpíada Brasileira De Matemática Das Escolas Públicas
The Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad of Public Schools ( pt, 'Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas') (OBMEP) is an annual Mathematics contest created in 2005 by the Brazilian Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia (MCT) and Ministry of Education (Brazil), Ministério da Educação (MEC), in collaboration with Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) and Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática (SBM), to stimulate the mathematics education in Brazil. It is open to public school students from fifth grade to high school. In 2014 more than 18 million students were enrolled for its first round. Education In Brazil
Education in Brazil has had many changes. It first began with Jesuit missions, that controlled education for a long time. Then, two hundred years after their arrival, their powers were limited by the Marquis of Pombal. Shortly after the Jesuits' power was limited, the Brazilian government took over education and it is now is run by the government through the Ministry of Education. Issues in education are now seen through PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment, and the Idep assessment now used by the Ministry. They have historically tested below average on all topics but are improving in mathematics. Brazil uses both public and private school systems. They have the traditional primary, secondary, tertiary and technical school levels. The Human Rights Measurement Initiative finds that Brazil is doing 86.8% of what should be possible at its level of income for the right to education.
