Ole Jacob Hystad
Ole Jacob Hystad (born 20 July 1960) is a Norwegian jazz musician (tenor saxophone and clarinet). He was born in Stord, and is the brother of jazz saxophonist Jan Kåre Hystad. Career Hystad is leader of his own Ole Jacob Hystad Quartet, originally comprising additional Sigurd Ulveseth (bass), Ben Besiakov, (piano), and Stein Inge Brækhus (drums). Later the quartet substituted Brækhus with Alex Riel for their second album ''Tune in – take out'' (2002), and has lately consisted of Dag Arnesen (piano), Sigurd Ulveseth (bass) and Frank Jakobsen (drums). He also played in Bakeriet Bluesband, and on releases by the musicians Atle Hansen, Lars Erik Drevvatne and Ole Amund Gjersvik, and been at the forefront of Stord Jazz and Blues Festival. Stord
Stord is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Sunnhordland. Stord is sometimes called "Norway in miniature" since it has such a variety of landscapes: coastline, fjords, forests, agricultural land, and mountain areas. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Leirvik, which is also the largest town in the municipality and the whole region of Sunnhordland. Leirvik was declared a town in 1997. Dexter Gordon
Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and actor. He was among the most influential early bebop musicians, which included other greats such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell. Gordon's height was , so he was also known as "Long Tall Dexter" and "Sophisticated Giant". His studio and performance career spanned more than 40 years. Gordon's sound was commonly characterized as being "large" and spacious and he had a tendency to play behind the beat. He was known for inserting musical quotes into his solos, with sources as diverse as " Happy Birthday" and well known melodies from the operas of Wagner. This is not unusual in jazz improvization, but Gordon did it frequently enough to make it a hallmark of his style. One of his major influences was Lester Young. ECM Records
ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) is an independent record label founded by Karl Egger, Manfred Eicher and Manfred Scheffner in Munich in 1969. While ECM is best known for jazz music, the label has released a variety of recordings, and ECM's artists often refuse to acknowledge boundaries between genres. ECM's motto is "the most beautiful sound next to silence", taken from a 1971 review of ECM releases in ''Coda'', a Canadian jazz magazine. ECM has been distributed in the U.S. by Warner Bros. Records, PolyGram Records, BMG, and, since 1999, Universal Music, the successor of PolyGram, worldwide. The Core (band)
The Core (established 1999 in Trondheim, Norway) is a Norwegian Jazz band, known from a series of recordings. It was initiated by the drummer Espen Aalberg, and are performing music in the Coltrane/ Shorter tradition. (in Norwegian) Biography Their musical expression are rooted in African-American music, with a touch of funk and rock. After releasing the album ''Vision'' (2004), with music inspired by Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler and John Coltrane, (by Tor Hammerø, in Norwegian) they followed up with ''Blue sky'' (2006), with music composed by Steinar Raknes and Espen Aalberg, and some guitar contributions by Nils-Olav Johansen. Nattjazz
Bergen International Jazz Festival or Nattjazz, is one of the largest jazz festivals of Norway. The festival has a musical profile with an emphasis on ethnic and contemporary jazz. It is held annually in late May, coinciding with Festspillene i Bergen, and is located at Verftet in Bergen. Biography The festival was arranged for the first time in 1972 at ''Håndverkeren'' in Bergen (now closed). It moved to ''Studentsenteret'' in 1978 (now demolished and rebuilt), and eventually to ''USF Verftet'' in 1994. In 2012 Nattjazz was held in different localities in ''Vågsbunnen'' because of the reconstructions of ''USF Verftet''. During the course of the festival most concerts are held indoors, but with some outdoor concerts too. The festival has also collaborated with other events, such as Festspillene i Bergen in Grieghallen. John Surman
John Douglas Surman (born 30 August 1944) is an English jazz saxophone, bass clarinet, and synthesizer player, and composer of free jazz and modal jazz, often using themes from folk music. He has composed and performed music for dance performances and film soundtracks. Life and career Surman was born in Tavistock, Devon, England. He initially gained recognition playing baritone saxophone in the Mike Westbrook Band in the mid-1960s, and was soon heard regularly playing soprano saxophone and bass clarinet as well. His first playing issued on a record was with the Peter Lemer Quintet in 1966. After further recordings and performances with jazz bandleaders Mike Westbrook and Graham Collier and blues-rock musician Alexis Korner, he made the first record under his own name in 1968. In 1969, he founded The Trio along with two expatriate American musicians, bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Stu Martin.
