Old Anniesland
Old Anniesland is a rugby union ground in Glasgow, Scotland, with a capacity of approximately 3,500.. It is the home of Glasgow Hawks, who currently play in the Scottish Premiership. It is also used by Glasgow High Kelvinside. History Originally home to Glasgow Academicals in 1883, the playing fields were bought by Glasgow HSFP in 1919. Location It is situated just off Crow Road in Anniesland, in the west of Glasgow. Uses Home to Glasgow Hawks, it also hosts matches by Glasgow High Kelvinside. It is sometimes used to host Scotland Club XV matches. There is a main pitch for competitive games, and several other rugby pitches for play and training, some floodlit and one with Astroturf. Glasgow Hawks RFC
Glasgow Hawks is an amateur rugby union team in Glasgow, Scotland. They were Premiership Division One champions for three consecutive seasons from 2003–04 to 2005–06. History In Paris on 27 August 1995 a meeting of the International Rugby Board declared that professionalism was to be allowed in rugby. At that time there were differing views as to whether districts or Premier clubs in Scotland would become professional. Several Glasgow players decided to move to other teams. During season 1996–97 Brian Simmers decided to look into a merger of Glasgow Academicals (GAC) and Glasgow High Kelvinside (GHK). Glasgow High Kelvinside
Glasgow High Kelvinside , often abbreviated to GHK, is an amateur rugby union club in Glasgow, Scotland. They currently play in Scottish National League Division One. History Glasgow High Kelvinside was formed in 1982 by the merger of Kelvinside Academy and High School of Glasgow rugby clubs; Kelvinside Academicals and Glasgow HSFP. Both Glasgow High FP and Kelvinside Accies were struggling clubs at the time: Glasgow High in the Third Division; Kelvinside Academicals in the Fifth Division. The Scottish Premiership (referred to as the Tennents Premiership for sponsorship reasons) is an amateur league competition for Scottish rugby union clubs. First held in 1973, it is the top division of the Scottish League Championship. The most recent (2019) champions are Ayr, while the most successful club is Hawick, who have won the competition twelve times. Ten clubs contest the league, with the bottom club relegated to the Scottish National League Division One and second-bottom club involved in a play-off. The Glasgow Academical Football Club is the third oldest rugby football club in Scotland. The club was also a founder member of the Scottish Football Union (the future SRU) in 1873. History Glasgow Hawks In 1997 the decision was made to combine the first XV's of Glasgow Academicals and close rivals Glasgow High Kelvinside (themselves a fairly new club having been formed when the struggling Glasgow High FP and Kelvinside Academicals clubs combined in 1982), something that was predicted would happen only after "hell freezes over". Glasgow HSFP are a former rugby union team that played their home games at Glasgow, Scotland. The team was founded in 1884 by former pupils of the High School of Glasgow. The team no longer exists. In 1982 it merged with the Kelvinside Academicals RFC, Kelvinside Academicals - the rugby team of another school; the Kelvinside Academy - to form a rugby club called Glasgow High Kelvinside. In 1997, Glasgow High Kelvinside merged with Glasgow Academicals RFC, Glasgow Academicals to form Glasgow Hawks RFC, Glasgow Hawks. Anniesland ( gd, Fearann Anna) is a district in the West End of the Scottish city Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde, and centres on the major road junction of the Great Western Road (A82) and Crow Road/Bearsden Road (A739), known as Anniesland Cross. History and amenities Originally a farm owned by the Jordanhill estate, it was slowly sold-off during the late Victorian era as Glasgow quickly expanded. Scotland Club XV
The Scotland national Club XV rugby union team is one of several national rugby union teams behind the Scottish national side. The national Club XV takes the best players from club rugby in Scotland to form a side that regularly competes with a similar Ireland Club XV. The two teams play each other annually for the Dalriada Cup. The Scotland Club XV side also regularly play with the similar England Counties XV since 2014. The French also have a Club XV side named the France Federale which the Scotland Club XV have played. Scotland Club XV has also played a Wales Club XV. Shinty
Shinty ( gd, camanachd, iomain) is a team game played with sticks and a ball. Shinty is now played mainly in the Scottish Highlands and amongst Highland migrants to the big cities of Scotland, but it was formerly more widespread in Scotland, and was even played in northern England into the second half of the 20th century and other areas in the world where Scottish Highlanders migrated. While comparisons are often made with field hockey the two games have several important differences. In shinty a player is allowed to play the ball in the air and is allowed to use both sides of the stick, called a ''caman'', which is wooden and slanted on both sides. The stick may also be used to block and to tackle, although a player may not come down on an opponent's stick, a practice called hacking.
