Okere District
Okere District is one of the thirty-three districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Akuapim North District in 1988, which was created from the former Akuapim District Council; until it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on 15 March 2012 to become Akuapim North Municipal District. However on 15 March 2018, the northeast part of the district was split off to create Okere District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Akuapim North Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southeast part of Eastern Region and has Adukrom as its capital town. The Districts of Ghana are second-level administrative subdivisions of Ghana, below the level of region. There are 261 local metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (or MMDA's). History The districts of Ghana were re-organized in 1988/1989 in an attempt to decentralize the government and to assist in development. The reform of the late 1980s subdivided the regions of Ghana into 110 districts, where local district assemblies should deal with the local administration. By 2006, an additional 28 districts were created by splitting some of the original 110, bringing their number up to 138. In February 2008, there were more districts created and some were upgraded to municipal status. This brought the final number to 170 districts in Ghana. Since then, a further 46 districts have been added since 28 June 2012 bringing the total to 216 districts. Eastern Region, Ghana
The Eastern Region is located in south Ghana and is one of the sixteen administrative regions of Ghana. Eastern region is bordered to the east by the Lake Volta, to the north by Bono East Region and Ashanti region, to the west by Ashanti region, to the south by Central region and Greater Accra Region. The Regions of Ghana constitute the first level of subnational government administration within the Republic of Ghana. As of 2020, there are currently sixteen regions, which are further divided for administrative purposes into 260 local metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (or MMDA's). Adukrom
Adukrom is a town in the Okere District Assembly in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It shares borders with Awukugua Akuapem where Okomfo anokye was born The town is known for the Nifahene Stool of Akuapem and the capital of Okere District and situated on the Togo Atakora hills on the main Ho-Koforidua main trunk road in the northern part of Akuapem. It is also the political and administrative capital of the Okere Constituency which is currently represented in Parliament by the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament, Hon. Dan Botwe. Adukrom has an estimated population of 8,881 in 2013. The town used to be the capital of the Nifa Division of the Akuapem State which was created in 1730. Akuapim District is a former district council that was located in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1975. However, on 10 March 1989, it was split off into two new district assemblies: Akuapim South District (capital: Nsawam) and Akuapim North District (capital: Akropong). Abiriw
Abiriw is a town in the Okere District Assembly in the Eastern Region of Ghana.It shares border with Akropong and Dawu. On its southern border is Abiriw Sacred Grove, which has an area of 400 square mile. History Abiriw is one of the Guan states in Akuapem. The first point of settlement on the Akuapem hills was Ademirekusu, a place near a town called Obosomase. The initial settlements were just isolated villages. After some time for security reasons the people decided to come together to form one town. The name abiriw according to historians derives from a kyerepong( a local language for a specific Guan clan) phrase 'ζνε ζηι δζμ αβιριωα' (let us come together or let us live in a cluster).
