Okanagan Senior League
The Okanagan Senior Hockey League (OSHL) is a defunct Canadian ice hockey league that operated for 10 seasons (1951 to 1961) within the Okanagan region of British Columbia. This league is notable as it played hockey at the highest amateur level in North America. This league won two Allan Cups (1953–54 and 1955–56) and a World Championship (1955). History In 1951 the Okanagan Mainline League split up into two leagues: the Pacific Coast Senior League and the Okanagan Senior League. The Okanagan Senior League ceased its operations after the 1960-61 season. The league was then replaced by the ''Okanagan Junior Hockey League'', the precursor to the British Columbia Hockey League. In 1954, the Penticton V's of the Okanagan Senior League won the 1954 Allan Cup, as a result they were invited to represent Canada at the 1955 World Ice Hockey Championships. The British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association, more commonly known as BC Hockey, is a non-profit organization and member branch of Hockey Canada in charge of governing amateur hockey at all levels in British Columbia and Yukon Territory. It comprises approximately 150 minor hockey associations, 55,000 players, 4,500 referees, and 20,000 official volunteers. Penticton Vees (senior)
The Penticton Vees are a former senior men's ice hockey team from Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. They played in the Okanagan Senior League from to 1951 to 1961. They represented Canada in the 1955 Ice Hockey World Championships where they won Canada's 16th world championship title. History The Penticton Vees were named for the victory, valiant, and vidette varieties of peaches grown in the Okanagan Valley. The first game played by the senior Penticton Vees was opening of Penticton Memorial Arena on October 25, 1951, versus the Vernon Canadians. The Vees played in the Okanagan Senior Hockey League, and in 1953, were crowned Champions of Western Canada. They almost won the Allan Cup in their second season in 1952-53, losing the final to the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen. IIHF
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF; french: Fédération internationale de hockey sur glace; german: Internationale Eishockey-Föderation) is a worldwide governing body for ice hockey. It is based in Zurich, Switzerland, and has 83 member countries. The IIHF maintains the IIHF World Ranking based on international ice hockey tournaments. Rules of play for IIHF events differ from hockey in North America and the rules of the National Hockey League (NHL). Decisions of the IIHF can be appealed through the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IIHF maintains its own hall of fame for international ice hockey. The IIHF Hall of Fame was founded in 1997, and has been located within the Hockey Hall of Fame since 1998. Kelowna Packers
The Kelowna Packers were a senior ice hockey team from Kelowna, British Columbia. The team existed from 1949 to 1960, and played as members of the Okanagan Senior Hockey League from 1951 onward. They were runners-up in the 1958 Allan Cup finals, and were the first ice hockey team from Canada to play an exhibition tour in the Soviet Union. History The Kelowna Packers were established in 1949 in Kelowna, British Columbia. The Packers finished first place in the Okanagan Senior Hockey League (OSHL) during the 1957–58 season. In that year's playoffs, the Packers defeated the Kamloops Chiefs in a best-of-seven series to win the OSHL championship. In the Western Canada playoffs, the Packers defeated the Winnipeg Maroons to win the T. B. Patton Cup. Vernon Canadians
The Vernon Canadians were a men's ice hockey team from Vernon, British Columbia that played in the Okanagan Mainline League or the Okanagan Senior League from 1949 to 1961. In 1962, after the Okanagan Senior League folded, the Canadians became a beer league team and then an “old timers” team that still plays today. The Vernon Canadians won the 1956 Allan Cup, becoming the national senior ice hockey champions. This made them Canada's representative for the 1957 World Ice Hockey Championships, but the tournaments was being held in Moscow, and western nations boycotted them in protest over the Soviet Union's invasion of Hungary in 1956. They were the Western Canada senior champion one more time, losing in the 1959 Allan Cup national finals to the Whitby Dunlops. 1955 World Ice Hockey Championships
The 1955 Ice Hockey World Championships was the 22nd edition of the Ice Hockey World Championships. The tournament was held in Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Krefeld and Cologne, West Germany from February 25 to March 6, 1955. A total of 14 nations participated in this World Championship, which was a new record for the postwar era. As a result, the teams were seeded with the strongest 9 teams placed in Pool A (the championship pool) and the remaining 5 nations as well as the West German B team placed in Pool B. Canada, represented by the Penticton Vees of the Okanagan Senior League, won their 16th international title. For the second straight year both the Soviets and Canadians were undefeated until they played each other in the final game of the tournament. British Columbia Hockey League
The British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) is a Junior A ice hockey league from British Columbia under Hockey Canada and BC Hockey. Founded in Vernon in 1961, the BCHL now includes 18 teams. From 1993 to 2021, the league was a member of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL), an association of Junior A leagues across Canada that would play for the National Junior A Championship. The winner of the BCHL playoffs (Fred Page Cup) would continue on to play the Alberta Junior Hockey League champion in the Doyle Cup for the right to then compete in the National Junior A Championship. In 2021, the BCHL left the CJHL.
