Ohio's 21st Senatorial District
Ohio's 21st senatorial district has historically been based in urban Cleveland, Ohio, and consists primarily of Cleveland's West Side neighborhoods of Ohio City and Tremont; Downtown Cleveland; all of Cleveland's East Side neighborhoods; and the cities of Bratenahl, Cleveland Heights, and Shaker Heights. It encompasses Ohio House districts 9, 10 and 11. It has a Cook PVI of D+33. Its current Ohio Senator is Democrat Dale Martin of Cleveland. Martin was appointed on June 7, 2022, by a caucus of State Senate Democrats after the incumbent senator, Sandra Williams, resigned on June 1. Cleveland ( ), officially the City of Cleveland, is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. Cook Partisan Voting Index
The Cook Partisan Voting Index, abbreviated Cook PVI, CPVI, or PVI, is a measurement of how strongly a United States congressional district or U.S. state leans toward the Democratic or Republican Party, compared to the nation as a whole, based on how that district or state voted in the previous two presidential elections. The index is updated after each presidential election cycle, as well as after congressional redistricting. ''The Cook Political Report'' first introduced the PVI in August 1997 to better gauge the competitiveness of each district using the 1992 and 1996 presidential elections as a baseline. The most recent iteration is the 2022 Cook Partisan Voting Index, which was released with an updated formula for calculating PVI values. Shirley Smith (politician)
Shirley A. Smith (born November 29, 1950) is an American politician who served as a member of the Ohio Senate from 2007 to 2014. Previously, she was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. She is a Democrat. Early life and education Smith is a native of Cleveland. She earned an associate degree from Cuyahoga Community College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cleveland State University. Career Smith has worked in sales and marketing, and as a radio talk-show host for a major radio station in Cleveland, and has also served as an independent consultant for Coca-Cola Bottling Company. When incumbent C. J. Prentiss decided to run for the Ohio Senate, Smith and four other Democrats sought to replace her in the 1998 primary election. Jeff Johnson (Ohio Politician)
Jeffrey D. Johnson (born April 10, 1958) is an American politician and attorney who served as a member of Cleveland City Council for Ward 10 from 2014 to 2018. Johnson served as councilman for Ward 8 from 1984 to 1990 and as a member of the Ohio Senate from 1990 to 1998. Early life and education Johnson was raised in the Collinwood neighborhood and graduated from Collinwood High School. He holds a bachelor's degree in communications from Kent State University and a Juris Doctor and a master's degree in political science from Case Western Reserve University. Morris Jackson
M. Morrison Jackson (April 1, 1918 – December 12, 2004) was a member of the Ohio Senate. A native of Cleveland, Jackson served in the state Senate from 1967 to 1984. The most senior African American Senator at his time, he held a number of leadership roles during his time. Sandra R. Williams is a former Democratic member of the Ohio Senate who served the 21st district from 2015 to 2022. She also formerly served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2007 to 2014. Ohio Senate
The Ohio Senate is the upper house of the Ohio General Assembly. The State Senate, which meets in the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, first convened in 1803. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election. Even numbered seats and odd numbered seats are contested in separate election years. The president of the Ohio Senate presides over the body when in session, and is currently Matt Huffman. Ohio City, Cleveland
Ohio City is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Cleveland, Ohio. It is located immediately west of the Cuyahoga River. History The City of Ohio became an independent municipality on March 3, 1836, splitting from Brooklyn Township. The city grew from a population of 2,400 people in the early 1830s to over 4,000 in 1850. The municipality was annexed by Cleveland on June 5, 1854. James A.
