Morris Jackson
M. Morrison Jackson (April 1, 1918 – December 12, 2004) was a member of the Ohio Senate. A native of Cleveland, Jackson served in the state Senate from 1967 to 1984. The most senior African American Senator at his time, he held a number of leadership roles during his time. In 1982, upon the Senate's switch to a Democratic majority, Jackson was involved in a Republican coup in which he was promised the position of Senate President if he switched party affiliations. Ultimately, however, he remained with Democrats, and Harry Meshel Harry Meshel (June 13, 1924 – September 4, 2017) was an American Democratic politician. Ohio Senate
The Ohio Senate is the upper house of the Ohio General Assembly. The State Senate, which meets in the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, first convened in 1803. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election. Even numbered seats and odd numbered seats are contested in separate election years. The president of the Ohio Senate presides over the body when in session, and is currently Matt Huffman. Currently, the Senate consists of 25 Republicans and eight Democrats, with the Republicans controlling three more seats than the 22 required for a supermajority vote. Senators are limited to two consecutive terms. Harry Meshel (June 13, 1924 – September 4, 2017) was an American Democratic politician. He served as the president of the Ohio State Senate and chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party. Meshel is noted for his legislative efforts on behalf of the disabled, economic development, and solid and hazardous waste disposal.
