Of The Flesh
''Of the Flesh'' ( fil, Karnal) is a 1983 Philippine drama film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya. It was adapted and written by Ricky Lee from the legal story "To Take a Life" by Teresa Añover Rodriguez and produced by Benjamin G. Yalung. It sets in the 1930s during the American colonial era and it tells the story of a newly-wed couple Narcing (Phillip Salvador) and Puring (Cecille Castillo) arrived from Manila in the town of Mulawin, a place where it was filled with violent and tragic pasts and it has been similarized to Hell by the Storyteller, played by Charito Solis. As they arrive, they will witness all of the misfortunes and violent actions as it tackles rape, incest, parricide, and tyranny that has been tainted in the town's heart by the cruel man Gusting (Vic Silayan). Marilou Diaz-Abaya
Marilou Correa Diaz-Abaya (March 30, 1955 – October 8, 2012) was a Filipina multi-award winning film director. She was conferred the Order of National Artists of the Philippines for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022, she was the founder and president of the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center, a film school based in Antipolo, Philippines. She was the director of the 1998 film ''José Rizal'', a biographical film on the Philippines' national hero. She was part of the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. Gapan, officially the City of Gapan ( fil, Lungsod ng Gapan), is a 4th class component city in the province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines. ''Mr. & Ms. Special Edition'' was a weekly opposition tabloid magazine published from 1983 to 1986 that played a pivotal role in bringing about the downfall of the regime of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. Background ''Mr. & Ms. Special Edition'' was created by publisher Eugenia Apostol in response to the murder of opposition leader Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino upon his return from exile in the United States. National dailies were so intimidated by Marcos that coverage of the murder and Aquino's funeral, attended by two million Filipinos, was negligible. Catalino Ortiz Brocka (April 3, 1939 – May 22, 1991) was a Filipino film director. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and significant filmmakers in the history of Philippine cinema. He co-founded the organization Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP), dedicated to helping artists address issues confronting the country, and the Free the Artist Movement. Ricardo Lee (born as March 19, 1948) is a Filipino screenwriter, journalist, novelist, and playwright. He was conferred the Order of National Artists of the Philippines for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022. Starting in 1973, he has written more than 180 film screenplays. Aside from the Order of National Artists, which is the Philippines' highest recognition for individuals who have contributed significantly to the classical arts, his work has earned him more than 70 trophies from various award-giving bodies.
