Of Gods And Men (film)
''Of Gods and Men'' (french: Des hommes et des dieux) is a 2010 French drama film directed by Xavier Beauvois, starring Lambert Wilson and Michael Lonsdale. Its original French language title is ''Des hommes et des dieux'', which means "Of Men and of Gods" and refers to a verse from the Bible shown at the beginning of the film. It centers on a true story that happened in the monastery of Tibhirine, where nine Cistercian monks lived in harmony with the largely Muslim population of Algeria, until seven of them were kidnapped and assassinated in 1996 during the Algerian Civil War. Largely a tale of a peaceful situation between local Christians and Muslims before becoming a lethal one due to external forces, the screenplay focuses on the preceding chain of events in decay of government, expansion of terrorism, and the monks' confrontation with both the terrorists and the government authorities that led up to their deaths. Jean-Pierre Schumacher
Jean-Pierre Schumacher (15 February 1924 – 21 November 2021) was a French Trappist monk. Biography Schumacher was born on 15 February 1924 in Buding, Moselle. He was born and raised in a Catholic family of six children. At the age of eighteen he was enlisted in the Wehrmacht and escaped being sent to the Russian front thanks to a false diagnosis of tuberculosis during the military medical examination. Schumacher studied with the Marist Fathers and was ordained a priest in 1953. In 1957, he joined the trappists and entered the Abbey of the Notre-Dame de Timadeuc. At the request of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Algiers, Schumacher was sent in 1964 to Tibhirine, Algeria alongside three other monks from Timadeuc. Christophe Lebreton
Christophe Lebreton OCSO (October 11, 1950 – May 21, 1996) was a French Trappist monk. He was one of seven Trappist monks from the Our Lady of the Atlas Abbey of Tibhirine near Médéa, Algeria who were kidnapped and killed during the Algerian Civil War. He was recognized as a martyr by Pope Francis in January 2018, and proclaimed Blessed on December 8, 2018 in Oran, Algeria, along with the other martyrs of Algeria. His writings, published after his death, reveal his poetry and spiritual depth. The murder of the monks of Tibhirine gained widespread attention in the prize-winning film '' Of Gods and Men''. Charles-Marie Christian de Chergé, O.C.S.O (Colmar, 18 January 1937 – 21 May 1996), was a French Roman Catholic Cistercian monk. He was one of the seven monks from the Abbey of Our Lady of Atlas in Tibhirine, Algeria, kidnapped and believed to have been later killed by Islamists.
