Vasastan, Stockholm
Vasastaden, or colloquially Vasastan, (Swedish for "Vasa town") is a 3.00 km2 large city district in central Stockholm, Sweden, being a part of Norrmalm borough. The major parks in Vasastaden are Vasaparken and Observatorielunden near the centre and Vanadislunden and Bellevueparken in the north. Östermalm
Östermalm (; "Eastern city-borough") is a 2.56 km2 large district in central Stockholm, Sweden. With 71,802 inhabitants, it is one of the most populous districts in Stockholm. It is an extremely expensive area, having the highest housing prices in Sweden. History During the reign of the ruler of all of Scandinavia, king Eric of Pomerania in the early 15th century, a royal cowshed/barn was erected on the lands of the village Vädla. Since the town of Stockholm had grown and started to encroach on the borders of that village, there were many complaints about animals causing damage in the town. In the 17th century, the inhabitants of Stockholm were allowed to keep their cattle there. In 1639, parts of the allocated land for the cowshed/barn were put up for development. Stockholm Public Library (Swedish: ''Stockholms stadsbibliotek'' or ''Stadsbiblioteket'') is a library building in Stockholm, Sweden, designed by Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund, and one of the city's most notable structures. The name is today used for both the main library itself as well as the municipal library system of Stockholm. Architecture Discussed by a committee of which Asplund himself was a member from 1918, a design scheme was proposed in 1922, and construction began in 1924. Partly inspired by the ''Barrière Saint-Martin (Rotonde de la Villette)'' by Claude Nicolas Ledoux, Asplund abandoned earlier ideas for a dome in favour of a rotunda whose tall cylinder gives the exterior some monumentality. Odenplan
Odenplan is a plaza located in the district Vasastaden in central Stockholm, Sweden. History Odenplan was named after the old Norse god Odin. Odenplan metro station, opened in 1952, and Stockholm Odenplan commuter train station on the Stockholm commuter rail, opened in 2017, are located here. Odenplan was portrayed in the 1976 thriller film ''The Man on the Roof'', in which a helicopter crashes in the plaza. It also appears in the opening credits to the 1999 film ''Vuxna människor''. Gustaf Vasa Church
Gustaf Vasa Church ( sv, Gustaf Vasa kyrka) is a church located in the Vasastaden district of Stockholm, Sweden. Inaugurated in 1906 and named after 16th century King Gustav Vasa, it was designed by architect Agi Lindegren in the Baroque Revival style. Situated between two busy avenues partially lined with trees, its dome rises above the nearby Odenplan plaza. The floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross and seats 1,200 people, making it one of the largest churches in Stockholm. Interior The high altarpiece was designed and built by Burchard Precht in his workshop between 1728 and 1731. It is Sweden's largest sculptural work in the Baroque style, originally created for the Uppsala Cathedral. Stored away at the Skansen museum for several years, it finally ended up at the Gustaf Vasa Church in 1906. Vasaparken, Stockholm
Vasaparken is a park in the Vasastaden district of Stockholm, Sweden. History It was named after the Royal Vasa Dynasty. The park lies between the two squares Odenplan and Sankt Eriksplan. South of the park lies the Sabbatsberg hospital. Vasaparken was established in this area in 19th century. Construction work for the park was started in 1898 and in 1900 the eastern part was almost completed with work continued in the west and southwest until 1908. During World War I, the park was used to grow potatoes for the city. The world-famous Swedish children’s book writer Astrid Lindgren lived in a building by the park, and Vasaparken is mentioned in many of her books.
