Occitan Nationalism
Occitan nationalism is a social and political movement in Occitania. Nationalists seek self-determination, greater autonomy or the creation of a sovereign state of Occitania. The basis of nationalism is linguistic and cultural although currently the Occitan varieties are minority languages within the language area. The territories claimed under the Occitan nation represent a large part of southern France, Monaco, parts of Spain (Val d'Aran), and Italy (Occitan Valleys, Guardia Piemontese). Val D'Aran
Aran (; ; ) (previously officially called in Occitan Val d'Aran, Catalan: ''Vall d'Aran'', Spanish: ''Valle de Arán'') is an administrative entity (formerly considered a comarca) in Lleida, Catalonia, Spain, consisting of the Aran Valley, in area, in the Pyrenees mountains, in the northwestern part of the province of Lleida. This valley constitutes the only contiguous part of Catalonia located on the northern side of the Pyrenees. Hence, this valley holds the only Catalan rivers to flow into the Atlantic Ocean (for the same reason, the region is characterized by an Atlantic climate, instead of a Mediterranean one). The Garonne river flows through Aran from its source on the Pla de Beret (Beret Flat) near the Port de la Bonaigua. Comarca
A ''comarca'' (, or , or ) is a traditional region or local administrative division found in Portugal, Spain and some of their former colonies, like Brazil, Nicaragua, and Panama. The term is derived from the term ''marca'', meaning a "march, mark", plus the prefix ''co''-, meaning "together, jointly". The ''comarca'' is known in Aragonese as ''redolada'' () and in Basque as ''eskualde'' (). In addition, in Galician, ''comarcas'' are also called ''bisbarras'' (). Although the English word "county" and its near synonym "shire" have similar meanings, they are usually translated into Spanish and Portuguese as ''condado'', a term which in the Iberian peninsula only refers to regions historically ruled by a ''conde'' (count or earl). Unity Of Aran
Unity of Aran (Aranese: ', also ') is a political party in Val d'Aran, Spain. Practically the Aranese section of Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC), it is the ruling party of the comarca. Unity of Aran has its roots in Aranese nationalist ' ("The Thirds", referring to Aranese traditional administrative subdivisions) founded in 1978 to safeguard a special status for the ''comarca'' in the 1979 Statute of Autonomy and the nascent UA has opposed the aspirations of Catalan nationalism and acted jointly with affiliated Aranese Nationalist Party (') that struggles for a separate autonomous community status.
