Obra (TV Drama)
Obra (Life) (Ɔbra in Akan) was a Ghanaian television drama series which was very popular in Ghana in the 1980s. From Keteke to Obra TV series Some key members of the "Obra Drama Group" first appeared in a situational TV drama series called ''"Keteke"'' (Train/Locomotive) on GTV in 1981. The main plot of ''"Keteke"'' centred around everyday encounters at a train station, highlighting the challenges of ordinary people as they strive to make a decent living. This explains why ''"Keteke"'' had some notable characters: a ''Station Master'' who managed the affairs of the train station; a ''Ghanaman'' who portrayed the challenges of the ordinary Ghanaian; and ''Maame Dokono'' (Madam Kenkey) the resident food vendor of the train station. David Dontoh
David Kwame Dontoh (born 1964) and affectionately called ''Uncle David'', ''"Ghanaman" and "Kofi Abranteɛ"'' (Kofi Gentleman), is a veteran Ghanaian actor and television personality who has starred in numerous local and international films, drama, theatre, and other stage productions. He has been very influential in the development of television and drama, especially during the golden age of theatre in Ghana in the 80s and 90s. He took up acting in 1980 after seeing a National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) newspaper advert inviting potential actors to come forward for training in stage and film acting. The title of his first NAFTI film was ''"The Way To Shame"'' a short seven minute stage production which was directed by Alex Bannerman as part of his formal assessment in drama production. Grace Omaboe (born 10 June 1946), popularly known as Maame Dokono, is a Ghanaian actress, singer, television personality, author and a former politician. She run the former Peace and Love Orphanage which is now Graceful Grace school in Accra. She was honored by the organizers of 3Music Awards for her achievement in the entertainment industry in Ghana. Adwoa Smart
Belinda Naa Ode Oku (born October 5, 1970) is a Ghanaian actress popularly known in showbiz as ''"Adwoa Smart"''. She was born at Abossey Okai, a suburb of Accra in Ghana. Adwoa has acted in numerous movies and drama episodes over several decades. She was very popular and highly sought after during the heyday of Akan drama from 1980 to the year 2000 and beyond. Nana Ampadu
Nana Kwame Ampadu (31 March 1945 – 28 September 2021) was a Ghanaian musician and composer credited with numerous popular highlife tracks and he is known to have composed over 800 songs. He was also known as ''Adwomtofo Nyinaa Hene''. Ampadu was the lead singer, chief songwriter, and founder of the "African Brothers Band". He is regarded as a pioneer of highlife music and one of the most illustrious Ghanaian musicians of the 20th century. Music Ampadu's "African Brothers Band" was formed in 1963. Akan Language
Akan () is a Central Tano language and the principal native language of the Akan people of Ghana, spoken over much of the southern half of Ghana. About 80% of Ghana's population can speak Akan, and about 44% of Ghanaians are native speakers. It is also spoken in parts of Côte d'Ivoire. GTV (Ghana)
GTV (Ghana Today Television or Ghana Today) is the national public broadcaster of Ghana, run by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. It commenced operations on July 31, 1965 and was originally known as GBC TV. GTV broadcasts mainly local programming, with over 80% of the schedule consisting of original productions. Although its main production studio is located in Accra, capital city of Ghana, it has affiliations nationwide and covers 98% of the airwaves in Ghana, making it the most powerful mode of advertisement in Ghana. Provisional National Defence Council
The Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) was the name of the Ghanaian government after the People's National Party's elected government was overthrown by Jerry Rawlings, the former head of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, in a coup d'état on 31 December 1981. He remained in power until 7 January 1993. In a statement, Rawlings said that a "holy war" was necessary due to the PNP's failure to provide effective leadership and the collapse of the national economy and state services. The PNDC was a military dictatorship that induced civilians to participate in governance. Most of its members were civilians. Its policies reflected a revolutionary government that was pragmatic in its approach. Jerry John Rawlings
Jerry John Rawlings (22 June 194712 November 2020) was a Ghanaian military officer and politician who led the country for a brief period in 1979, and then from 1981 to 2001. He led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana. Rawlings came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d'état in 1979. Prior to that, he led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on 15 May 1979, just five weeks before scheduled democratic elections were due to take place. After handing power over to a civilian government, he took back control of the country on 31 December 1981 as the chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).
