Oakleigh Football Club
Oakleigh Football Club, nicknamed the Devils, was an Australian rules football club from Oakleigh which played in the VFA from 1929 until 1994. Oakleigh wore purple guernseys with a gold monogram thus giving them their original nickname the Purple and Golds. History The club was formed in 1891 and after having success in the Melbourne Districts Association (premierships in 1907, 1924, & 1928), they were one of two teams admitted into the VFA in 1929, the other being Sandringham. With former Essendon star player and coach, and future Fitzroy and Carlton coach Frank Maher in charge they won a premiership in just their second season with a 9-point win over Northcote in a very spiteful game, 9.6 (60) to 7.9 (51). The game had erupted into full scale violence during the last term when a Northcote defender elbowed an Oakleigh forward in the face and an all in brawl, involving a number of spectators as well as most players, ensued. Victorian Football Association
The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It includes teams from clubs based in the eastern states of Australia: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and includes reserves teams for the east coast AFL clubs. The league evolved from the former Victorian Football Association (VFA), and it has been known by its current name since 1996. For historical purposes, the present-day VFL is referred to as the VFA/VFL, to distinguish it from the present-day Australian Football League, which in turn was known until 1990 as the Victorian Football League and is thus referred to as the VFL/AFL. Clen Denning
Clen Charles Denning (28 February 1911 – 9 November 2009) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Thomas Clen Denning (1879-1917), and Agnes Caroline Denning (1880-1974), née Gunther, Clen Charles Denning was born at Collingwood, Victoria on 28 February 1911. He married Winifred Adelaide Newman (1915-2002) in 1938. Football Soon after he turned 16, Denning played for Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Oakleigh. He got his start in the VFL after a long wait when Oakleigh coach Frank Maher moved to coach the Carlton Football Club. Denning debuted with Carlton in 1935. Early in his career, Denning made a name for himself as a promising goalkicker; he scored six goals from his first six kicks—all in his first match— a record that stands to this day. Terry Smith (Australian Rules Footballer)
Terry Smith (6 February 1959 – 19 September 2006) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League. Smith was recruited from Tyntynder (a small town near Swan Hill) and debuted with the Richmond Football Club in 1980. He tasted success immediately, being part of Richmond's 1980 premiership side playing off half-back. In 1983 he moved to the St Kilda Football Club where he made a name for himself as a ruck-rover, and after three seasons with the Saints, he returned to Richmond for his final VFL season in 1986. He played 100 VFL games in total, 56 with the Tigers and 44 with the Saints. Smith died on 19 September 2006 from cancer, aged 47. He was described by Tigers teammate Michael Roach as "one of those blokes people liked to be around and liked to have a beer with". George Smeaton (footballer)
George Frederick Smeaton (27 May 1917 – 9 June 1978) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1935 and 1942 and then again from 1944 to 1946. Smeaton was nicknamed the "Brown Bomber", a nickname borrowed from Joe Louis, and was described by Jack Dyer as the toughest player he played with. Bill Barrot
William Thomas Barrot (6 May 1944 – 29 November 2016) was a professional Australian rules football player who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL), the South Australian Football League (SANFL) and the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Family The son of Wesley Thomas Barrot (1917-1978), and Peggy Eileen Barrot (1923-2016), née French, William Thomas Barrot was born at Melbourne on 6 May 1944. His brother Wes Barrot, a professional sprinter, also played VFL football with Richmond and with Collingwood. Kevin Tyree Dyson (born June 23, 1975) is a former American football wide receiver of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Tennessee Oilers 16th overall in the 1998 NFL Draft. Neil Crompton (footballer)
Colin Neil Crompton (16 August 1937 – 11 December 2003) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Crompton usually played in the back pocket and thus did not kick many goals however it is for a goal he kicked in Melbourne's 1964 Grand Final win over Collingwood that he is most remembered for. With Melbourne trailing and just minutes remaining in the game, Crompton had followed his Collingwood opponent up the ground and managed to pick up a loose ball in front of goal. He kicked the ball low towards goal and it floated through for his only goal of the season and gave Melbourne the lead. It was the last goal of the match. He also played cricket for Victoria during the early part of his career, appearing in 45 first-class matches for them between 1957 and 1962.
