Oakfield is a town in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 767 at the 2000 census. The Village of Oakfield is located within the town. The unincorporated community of Oak Center is also located in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.8 square miles (92.7 km2), of which, 35.8 square miles (92.6 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (0.14%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 767 people, 252 households, and 203 families residing in the town. The population density was 21.5 people per square mile (8.3/km2). There were 267 housing units at an average density of 7.5 per square mile (2.9/km2). Fond du Lac County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 104,154. Its county seat is Fond du Lac. The county was created in the Wisconsin Territory in 1836 and later organized in 1844. Oakfield Tornado
The 1996 Oakfield tornado outbreak was a severe weather event that occurred on July 18, 1996 in Wisconsin, United States, primarily affecting the village of Oakfield. The outbreak produced 12 tornadoes, with the most significant being an F5 tornado which caused severe damage to the village and the surrounding areas. No deaths were associated with the outbreak, with 17 injuries in total. The most intense tornado of the outbreak initially touched down at 6:05p.m. CST (00:05UTC) 4 miles northwest of Oakfield, before rapidly intensifying to F5 strength just east of the village. Estimated wind speeds reached 265 mph (426 km/h) in the tornado's core as it carved a path approximately 20 miles (32 km) long. Destruction in Oakfield included leveling homes, sending vehicles airborne, bending steel rebar, and sweeping crop fields clean. Edgar Wilcox (January 20, 1830 – October 25, 1917) was a politician and farmer. Born in Genesee County, New York, Wilcox moved with his parents to Sugar Creek Wisconsin Territory in 1845. In 1849, Wilcox and his family moved back to New York. In 1857, Wilcox moved to the Town of Oakfield, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin and settled on a farm.
