Oregon Catholic Press (OCP, originally the Catholic Truth Society of Oregon) is a publisher of Catholic liturgical music based in Portland, Oregon. It published the newspapers '' Catholic Sentinel'' and ''El Centinela''; both papers have been discontinued effective October 1, 2022. Operations The not-for-profit company publishes liturgical music, books, choral collections, hymnals, missals, and support materials serving the universal and multicultural church in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese. OCP also publishes music for youth and young adults, through its Spirit and Song imprint and religious education materials and academic and inspirational books through its Pastoral Press imprint. It also publishes the '' Catholic Sentinel'', the diocesan newspaper for the Archdiocese of Portland. Alexander Christie (bishop)
Alexander Christie (May 28, 1848 – April 6, 1925) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Bishop of Vancouver Island (1898–1899) and Archbishop of Oregon City (1899–1925). He founded the University of Portland in 1901. Biography Christie was born in Highgate, Vermont and later moved with his family to Wisconsin and, after the end of the Civil War, to Austin, Minnesota. He studied at the Grand Seminary of Montreal from 1874 to 1877, and was ordained a priest on December 2, 1877. He served as pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Waseca from 1878 until 1890, when he was transferred to the new Church of the Ascension in Minneapolis, Minnesota. John Foley (Jesuit)
John Foley (born 1939) is an American Jesuit priest who is a composer of Catholic liturgical music and a professor of liturgy. Among his compositions are "One Bread, One Body" (1978), "Earthen Vessels" (1975), "Come to the Water" (1978), "The Cry of the Poor" (1978), "For You Are My God" (1970), and the album ''As a River of Light'' (1989). Much of Foley's early work on liturgical music was as a member of a group called the St. Louis Jesuits, composed of fellow Jesuit seminarians, with whom he released several albums. He also released several solo collections of liturgical music. Both the solo and the group efforts were released through publishers North American Liturgy Resources (NALR), OCP (formerly Oregon Catholic Press), and GIA Publications. Foley earned a doctorate in liturgical theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. Contemporary Catholic liturgical music encompasses a comprehensive variety of styles of music for Catholic liturgy that grew both before and after the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). The dominant style in English-speaking Canada and the United States began as Gregorian chant and folk hymns, superseded after the 1970s by a folk-based musical genre, generally acoustic and often slow in tempo, but that has evolved into a broad contemporary range of styles reflective of certain aspects of age, culture, and language. Alexander Sample
Alexander King Sample (born November 7, 1960) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He has been serving as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon since 2013. Sample previously served as bishop of the Diocese of Marquette in Michigan from 2005 to 2013. Early life and education Alexander King Sample was born in Kalispell, Montana, to Alexander and Joyce (née Dory) Sample. His father was of Scottish heritage and his mother Polish. The Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican, commonly known as the , or , was the 21st ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic Church.
