Nunavut Implementation Commission
The Nunavut Implementation Commission was a federally appointed body of nine political figures and community leaders appointed from across Northwest Territories, Canada to establish and implement policy towards the division of Northwest Territories and the creation of Nunavut. Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories (abbreviated ''NT'' or ''NWT''; french: Territoires du Nord-Ouest, formerly ''North-Western Territory'' and ''North-West Territories'' and namely shortened as ''Northwest Territory'') is a federal territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately and a 2016 census population of 41,790, it is the second-largest and the most populous of the three territories in Northern Canada. David Alagalak
David Alagalak (born 11 April 1944 on Southampton Island, Nunavut) is a Canadian politician, who was the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the electoral district of Arviat in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 2004 to 2008. John Amagoalik
John Amagoalik (born November 26, 1947) is an Inuit politician from Nunavik (Québec). He campaigned for Inuit rights and made a significant contribution to the founding of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. He was Chairman of the Nunavut Implementation Commission and is widely regarded as the "Father of Nunavut". Early life and education Amagoalik was born on November 26, 1947, near Inukjuaq in Nunavik in northern Québec. His family relocated to Resolute Bay and he was educated in residential schools in Resolute Bay, Churchill and Iqaluit. However, Amagoalik stopped his formal education after grade 9 to support his father who had fallen ill with tuberculosis. His families living conditions after their forced relocation to Resolute was poor, with no vegetation or fish. Mary Simon
Mary Jeannie May Simon (in Inuktitut syllabics: ᒥᐊᓕ ᓴᐃᒪᓐ, iu, script=Latn, Ningiukudluk; born August 21, 1947) is a Canadian civil servant, diplomat, and former broadcaster who has served as the 30th governor general of Canada since July 26, 2021. Simon is Inuk, making her the first Indigenous person to hold the office. Simon was born in Fort Severight (now Kangiqsualujjuaq), Quebec. She briefly worked as a producer and announcer for the CBC Northern Service in the 1970s before entering public service, serving on the board of the Northern Quebec Inuit Association and playing a key role in the Charlottetown Accord negotiations. Simon was Canada's first ambassador for circumpolar affairs from 1994 to 2004, as well as a lead negotiator for the creation of the Arctic Council. Bill Lyall
William Lyall (born 1941 in Fort Ross - 28 December 2021), known as Bill Lyall, of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada, was a territorial politician. Lyall was elected to the 8th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly in the 1975 election. Lyall grew up in Taloyoak, known then as Spence Bay, Northwest Territories, one of ten children of Ernie and Nipisha Lyall. He attended Sir John Franklin High School in Yellowknife and then a technology college in Alberta. After returning to Taloyoak, he later moved to Cambridge Bay. In 1975, he was elected to the NWT Legislature. He ran again in the 1979 election, as did his younger brother Bobby Lyall, but the election was won by Kane Tologanak. In 1978, Lyall was elected president of the Ikaluktutiak Co-op in Cambridge Bay, a position he still holds. By 1993, he had helped the Co-op grow from $300,000 in assets to $2.3 million. Peter Irniq
Piita Taqtu Irniq, formerly Peter Irniq, (born February 1, 1947) is an Inuk politician in Canada, who served as the second commissioner of Nunavut from April 2000 to April 2005. Biography Born in Lyon Inlet near Repulse Bay, Northwest Territories (now Naujaat, Nunavut). Irniq is an Inuit cultural teacher and has lived most of his life in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, including Naujaat, Coral Harbour, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet, Rankin Inlet, and Iqaluit.
