Now He Sings, Now He Sobs
''Now He Sings, Now He Sobs'' is the second album by Chick Corea, released in December 1968 on Solid State Records. It features Corea in a trio with acoustic bassist Miroslav Vitouš and drummer Roy Haynes. It was later reissued on CD by Blue Note in 2002 with eight bonus tracks recorded at the same sessions. All of the tracks on the original album are improvisations based on Corea’s ideas, with some being entirely free improvisations (such as "The Law of Falling and Catching Up" and "Fragments"). Vitous and Haynes would reunite with Corea as an acoustic trio on ''Trio Music'' (ECM, 1982), '' Trio Music, Live in Europe'' (ECM, 1986), and ''The Trio Live From The Country Club'' (Stretch, 1996). The bonus tracks released on the CD include a cover of Thelonious Monk's composition " Pannonica" and the Wood/Mellin standard "My One and Only Love". Chick Corea
Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (June 12, 1941 – February 9, 2021) was an American jazz composer, pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, and occasional percussionist. His compositions "Spain", " 500 Miles High", "La Fiesta", "Armando's Rhumba", and "Windows" are widely considered jazz standards. As a member of Miles Davis's band in the late 1960s, he participated in the birth of jazz fusion. In the 1970s he formed Return to Forever. Along with McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Keith Jarrett, Corea is considered one of the foremost jazz pianists of the post-John Coltrane era. Corea continued to collaborate frequently while exploring different musical styles throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He won 27 Grammy Awards and was nominated more than 60 times. Robert Mellin
Israel Melnikoff (September 22, 1902 – July 10, 1994), known professionally as Robert Mellin, was a Russian Empire-born American composer and lyricist and music publisher. Born in Kyiv and raised in Chicago, where his first job was music plugger at Remick Music. In the early 1940s he moved to New York, where he founded his own company in 1947. Moving to Europe in the early 1950s, Mellin wrote the music or lyrics for hundreds of songs, including several hits, over the next two decades. His biggest hit was ''My One and Only Love'' written with lyricist Guy Wood. It was recorded by many artists, including Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker and (as a duet) John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. Guy Wood
Guy B. Wood (24 July 1911 – 23 February 2001) was a musician and songwriter born in Manchester, England. Wood started his career in music playing saxophone in dance bands in England. He moved to the United States in the 1930s, where he worked for Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures as well as serving as bandleader at the Arcadia Ballroom in New York. His songs include "Till Then", "My One and Only Love", " Shoo-Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy". His song "Till Then" reached the pop charts three times (in 1944, 1954, and 1963). Wood also wrote songs for Captain Kangaroo and the Radio City Music Hall. Wood died on 23 February 2001. Windows (composition)
"Windows" is a jazz composition in time by Chick Corea. It has become a jazz standard, and is among the earliest of Corea's compositions to have achieved this status. Background Corea first recorded "Windows" under the title "Uph" on a session led by Mercer Ellington on January 5, 1966. This session was later published on the compilation album ''Duke Ellington - New Mood Indigo''. Joining Corea were Paul Gonsalves, Aaron Bell, and Louis Bellson, all sideman of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. In August 1966, "Windows" was recorded for the Hubert Laws album '' Laws' Cause'', featuring Corea on piano, and issued in 1969. The same track would later appear on the 1973 compilation album '' Inner Space''.
