''Not in Front of the Children'' is a BBC Television sitcom, which ran for four series from 1967 to 1970. It starred Wendy Craig as Jennifer Corner, a rather scatterbrained middle-class housewife. Her husband Henry was a school art teacher, played by Paul Daneman in the ''Comedy Playhouse'' pilot "House in a Tree" and the first series, and Ronald Hines subsequently. They had three children, a boy in his early teens (played by Hugo Keith-Johnston) and two girls who were slightly younger (played by Roberta Tovey and Jill Riddick). Charlotte Mitchell played her friend Mary. In later series, she had a baby, and they moved from the London suburb of Battersea to the country. Situation Comedy
A sitcom, a portmanteau of situation comedy, or situational comedy, is a genre of comedy centered on a fixed set of characters who mostly carry over from episode to episode. Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience. Sitcoms originated in radio, but today are found mostly on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. A situation comedy television program may be recorded in front of a studio audience, depending on the program's production format. The effect of a live studio audience can be imitated or enhanced by the use of a laugh track. Critics disagree over the utility of the term "sitcom" in classifying shows that have come into existence since the turn of the century. Battersea
Battersea is a large district in south London, part of the London Borough of Wandsworth, England. It is centred southwest of Charing Cross and extends along the south bank of the River Thames. BBC Radio 4 Extra (formerly BBC Radio 7) is a British digital radio station from the BBC, broadcasting archived repeats of comedy, drama and documentary programmes nationally, 24 hours a day. It is the sister station of BBC Radio 4 and the principal broadcaster of the BBC's spoken-word archive, and as a result the majority of its programming originates from that archive. Francis Matthews (2 September 1927 – 14 June 2014) was an English actor, best known for playing Paul Temple in the BBC television series Paul Temple (TV series), of the same name and for voicing Captain Scarlet (character), Captain Scarlet in ''Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons''. Early life Matthews was born in York on 2 September 1927, to Henry and Kathleen Matthews. His father was a shop steward at the Rowntree's chocolate factory near York. His parents took him often to the theatre, where he gained a love of acting. He attended St George's RC Primary School, then Mount St Mary's Catholic High School, Leeds, St Michael's Jesuit College in Leeds. Charlotte Mitchell (born Edna Winifred Mitchell; 23 July 1926 – 2 May 2012) was an English actress and poet. Biography In the 1950s she provided lyrics, sketches, and occasionally acted in revues on London's West End. She was especially successful in her ventures providing lyrics for Madeleine Dring in ''Airs on a Shoestring'' (1953), ''Pay the Piper'' (1954), and '' Fresh Airs'' (1956), all productions of Laurier Lister. Richard Waring (writer)
Richard Waring (born Brian Barton-Chapple, 26 June 1925 – 5 December 1994) was a British television scriptwriter. Waring was the author of numerous domestic sitcoms from the early 1960s, he worked for both the BBC and ITV. His first success was ''Marriage Lines'' (1961–66) with Richard Briers and Prunella Scales. In '' Not in Front of the Children'' (1967–70), Wendy Craig's dizzy housewife made her first appearance. Waring created '' ...And Mother Makes Three'' (1971–73), and its sequel '' ...And Mother Makes Five'' (1974–76), also featuring Craig in a similar role, but he did not write all of the episodes.
