North Staffordshire Tramways Company
The North Staffordshire Tramways operated a steam tramway service from 1881 to 1898 in the Staffordshire Potteries area. History The North Staffordshire Tramways Company Limited was formed on 4 December 1878. The ''Stoke-on-Trent, Fenton, Longton and District Tramways Order'' of 1879 was sanctioned by the Tramways Order Confirmation Act of 11 August 1879 to build four routes of tramway. The company acquired the assets of the Staffordshire Potteries Street Railway Company on 2 March 1880 and continued to operate it between Hanley and Burslem until it rebuilt it in 1882. The North Staffordshire Tramways Order of 1880 sanctioned the building of five additional routes. Both acts of parliament sanctioned the use of steam engines, and this was the company's selected method of motive power. The first routes to be constructed ran from Stoke centre to Longton Market Place via Fenton, with branches along Longton High Street and Trentham Road. The Staffordshire Potteries is the industrial area encompassing the six towns Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke and Tunstall, which is now the city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. Staffordshire Potteries Street Railway Company
The Staffordshire Potteries Street Railway operated a horse-drawn tramway service between Hanley and Burslem from 1862 to 1880. History The prospectus for the company was issued in October 1861. The tramway was pioneered by George Francis Train. The share sale was quickly successful and ground breaking took place on 27 November 1861 in Waterloo Road, Burslem, near the toll chain. Progress on construction was rapid and the line opened for passengers on 13 January 1862, terminating temporarily at the Bethel Chapel in Burslem, as there was still 200 yards of rails to lay down. The journey time was between 11 and 12 minutes and the fare was fixed at 3d () each way. One of the disadvantages of the system was that the rails were not flush with the street, and so inconvenienced other road users. Hanley
Hanley is one of the six towns that, along with Burslem, Longton, Fenton, Tunstall and Stoke-upon-Trent, amalgamated to form the City of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. Burslem ( ) is one of the six towns that along with Hanley, Tunstall, Fenton, Longton and Stoke-upon-Trent form part of the city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. Charles Scrope Hutchinson
Major-General Charles Scrope Hutchinson (8 August 1826 – 29 February 1912) was Chief Inspecting Officer for Railways from 1892 to 1895. Family Hutchinson was born in Hythe, Kent, son of Scrope Hutchinson, M.D. He was educated at University College School from 1839 to 1841. He was married on 6 January 1852 in Gibraltar to Christina Ross, youngest daughter of William Ross of Gibraltar. The North Staffordshire Railway (NSR) was a British railway company formed in 1845 to promote a number of lines in the Staffordshire Potteries and surrounding areas in Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire. The company was based in Stoke-on-Trent and was nicknamed ''The Knotty''; its lines were built to the standard gauge of . Manning Wardle
Manning Wardle was a steam locomotive manufacturer based in Hunslet, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Precursor companies The city of Leeds was one of the earliest centres of locomotive building; Matthew Murray built the first commercially successful steam locomotive, ''Salamanca'', in Holbeck, Leeds, in 1812. Merryweather & Sons
Merryweather & Sons of Clapham, later Greenwich, London, were builders of steam fire engines and steam tram engines. The founder was Moses Merryweather (1791–1872) of Clapham, who was joined by his son Richard Moses (1839–1877). Fire appliances The Merryweathers worked with the engineer Edward Field to fit his design of a vertical boiler onto a horse-drawn platform. They successfully applied it for use in their steam fire engine, thus improving water pressure and making easier to use once steam had been got up. It was reckoned that an engine could get up enough pressure to pump within ten minutes of a call out; the fire could be started before leaving the fire station so there would be enough pressure by the time they arrived at the scene of the fire. Beyer, Peacock and Company was an English railway locomotive manufacturer with a factory in Openshaw, Manchester. Founded by Charles Beyer, Richard Peacock and Henry Robertson, it traded from 1854 until 1966. The company exported locomotives, and machine tools to service them, throughout the world. Founders German-born Charles Beyer had undertaken engineering training related to cotton milling in Dresden before moving to England in 1831 aged 21.
