North-East Project
North-East Project ( it, Progetto NordEst, PNE) is a Venetist, fiscal federalist and libertarian Italian political party based in Veneto, demanding larger autonomy, if not complete independence for the region. History The party was founded in June 2004 by Giorgio Panto, along with former members of the Liga Veneta– Lega Nord (LV–LN) and former members of Liga Fronte Veneto, notably Mariangelo Foggiato and Ettore Beggiato. Panto himself had been a long-time supporter of Lega Nord, but he distanced from it as he perceived it to be too moderate and Lombardy-centred. The PNE won 5.4% of the vote in the 2005 regional election, electing Foggiato and Diego Cancian to the Regional Council of Veneto, while Panto, who was candidate for President and ran a campaign based on the slogan "Dignity. Mariangelo Foggiato
Mariangelo Foggiato (Possagno, 19 April 1954) is a Venetist politician. Having joined Liga Veneta–Lega Nord, he was elected to the Regional Council of Veneto in 1995. However, he left the party in 1998, when he founded Liga Veneta Repubblica (LVR) along with Fabrizio Comencini. He was national president of LVR until 1999, when he left the party, together with Senator Antonio Serena, founding the Liga dei Veneti, in dissent on the alliance with Forza Italia prospected by Fabrizio Comencini, LVR national secretary. Foggiato then abandoned politics until 2004, when returned to political activity as member of North-East Project (PNE), of which he was a founder (along with Giorgio Panto) and secretary. The People Of Freedom
The People of Freedom ( it, Il Popolo della Libertà, PdL) was a centre-right political party in Italy. The PdL, launched by Silvio Berlusconi on 18 November 2007, was initially a federation of political parties, notably including Forza Italia and National Alliance, which participated as a joint election list in the 2008 general election. The federation was later transformed into a party during a party congress on 27–29 March 2009. 2005 Venetian Regional Election
The Venetian regional election of 2005 took place on 3–4 April 2005. Giancarlo Galan (Forza Italia, House of Freedoms) was re-elected for the third time in a row President of the Region, but the support for him was diminished by the presence of a third candidate, Giorgio Panto, who picked votes both from the centre-right and the Venetian nationalism, Venetist camps, and of a fourth candidate representing the far right, Roberto Bussinello. Although Forza Italia remained the largest party in the Council and also in the Region as a whole (The Olive Tree (political coalition), The Olive Tree was only an electoral alliance at the time and the three parties which were part of it formed separate groups in the Council), it suffered a serious decline in term of votes, from 30.3% of 2000 Venetian regional election, 2000 to 22.7%. Ettore Beggiato
Ettore Beggiato (born 4 August 1954) is an Italian historian and politician. As member of several Venetist political parties (Liga Veneta 1980–1987, Union of the Venetian People 1987–1995, Liga Veneta–Lega Nord 1995–1998, Liga Veneta Repubblica/Veneti d'Europa/Liga Fronte Veneto 1998–2004), he was member of the Regional Council of Veneto from 1985 to 2000. He was secretary of Liga Fronte Veneto from 2002 to 2004, when he joined the North-East Project, party of which he is currently member. Beggiato is the author of many books about the history and the culture of Veneto such as ''1866: The great swindle'', about the referendum with which Veneto was united with Italy.
