Nora Cleary
Nora Cleary (1924-1988) was a well known Irish traditional singer and lilter from the hamlet "The Hand", near Milltown Malbay, County Clare, Ireland. Nora Cleary was the second youngest child of Daniel and Catherina Cleary. With the exception of short periods in Clounlaheen and Manchester Manchester () is a city in Greater Manchester, England. It had a population of 552,000 in 2021. It is bordered by the Cheshire Plain to the south, the Pennines to the north and east, and the neighbouring city of Salford to the west. The t ..., she lived her whole life in The Hand. Her parents were already into music and stimulated her to sing. Further stimulus she received from her teachers at Shanaway National School. On a relatively young age she started singing in McCarthy 's Pub - still existing - in Clounlaheen, something she kept doing all her life. She died after a short illness. Lilting is a form of traditional singing common in the Goidelic speaking areas of Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Mann. It goes under many names, and is sometimes referred to as ''diddling'' (generally in England and Scotland), ''mouth music'', ''jigging'', ''chin music'' or ''cheek music'', ''puirt à beul'' or ''canntaireachd'' in Scottish Gaelic, or ''portaireacht bhéil'' (''port a'bhéil'', "mouth-singing") in Irish. It in some ways resembles scat singing. Features Lilting often accompanied dancing. Features such as rhythm and tone dominate in lilting. The lyrics thus are often meaningless or nonsensical. History The origins of lilting are unclear. It might have resulted in part from the unavailability of instruments, whether because they were seen as too expensive or were banned. Milltown Malbay (), also Miltown Malbay, is a town in the west of County Clare, Ireland, near Spanish Point. The population was 829 at the 2016 Census. Name There is a townland on the southern edge of the town called Poulawillin or Pollawillin (). There is evidence that this name was once applied to the town – for example, in the ''Parish Namebook'' of the ''Ordnance Survey'' (1839) there is a reference to "Baile an Mhuillinn anciently Poll a’ Mhuillinn, Milltown Malbay". ''Malbay'' is the name of the bay to the west of Milltown. The name ''Malbay'' is thought to come from the Irish ''meall-bhaigh'', which roughly means "treacherous coast".
