Nicholls Town
Nicholls Town is a town located in North Andros, part of Andros, Bahamas, Andros island in the Bahamas. The town features a sweeping beachfront. It is named for Edward Nicolls, an Anglo-Irish military leader in the Caribbean in the early 19th century. He was an active Abolitionism, abolitionist and because of him many former slaves were able to escape from the U.S. The founders of Nicholls Town were ex-slave refugees from the United States. The Andros Island Beach Resort is located in Nicolls Town. The town is the centre for diving and snorkelling in North Andros. It has a population of 645 (2010 Census). Andros, Bahamas
Andros Island is an archipelago within the Bahamas, the largest of the Bahamian Islands. Politically considered a single island, Andros in total has an area greater than all the other 700 Bahamian islands combined. The land area of Andros consists of hundreds of small islets and cays connected by mangrove estuaries and tidal swamplands, together with three major islands: North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros. The three main islands are separated by bights, estuaries that trifurcate the island from east to west. It is long by wide at the widest point. Etymology The indigenous Lucayan people called the island ''Habacoa'' (or ''Babucca'') meaning "large upper outer land". Local government in the Bahamas exists in two forms, namely second-schedule and third-schedule district councils. There are a total of 32 local government districts: 13 second-schedule districts, which are further sub-divided into town areas, and 19 third-schedule districts, which are all unitary authorities. The second and third schedules together make up the first schedule. Local government policy is formulated and administered by the Department of Lands and Local Government through the Office of the Prime Minister. The day-to-day policy handling of the portfolio falls to the Minister of Local Government who also is empowered to create new local government areas from time to time based on demographics. Edward Nicolls
Sir Edward Nicolls ( – 5 February 1865) was an Anglo-Irish officer of the Royal Marines. Known as "Fighting Nicolls", he had a distinguished military career. According to his obituary in ''The Times'', he was "in no fewer than 107 actions, in various parts of the world", and had "his left leg broken and his right leg severely injured, was shot through the body and right arm, had received a severe sabre cut in the head, was bayoneted in the chest, and had lost the sight of an eye." Nicolls was born in Coleraine, Ireland, in a family with a military tradition; his father was surveyor of excise in Coleraine, and his maternal grandfather was a rector. Nicolls spent his life as an intensely devout Ulster Protestant. He had two years of school in Greenwich, but enlisted in the Royal Navy at the age of 11. Abolitionism
Abolitionism, or the abolitionist movement, is the movement to end slavery. In Western Europe and the Americas, abolitionism was a historic movement that sought to end the Atlantic slave trade and liberate the enslaved people. The British abolitionist movement started in the late 18th century when English and American Quakers began to question the morality of slavery. James Oglethorpe was among the first to articulate the Enlightenment case against slavery, banning it in the Province of Georgia on humanitarian grounds, and arguing against it in Parliament, and eventually encouraging his friends Granville Sharp and Hannah More to vigorously pursue the cause. San Andros Airport
San Andros Airport is an airport near Nicholls Town on Andros Island in The Bahamas. Facilities The airport resides at an elevation of above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 12/30 with a bitumen surface measuring . The airport has services from Westernair, Bahamasair, Lynx (from Fort Lauderdale) and other small twin engine charter planes that run between the islands. Since November 2006, the airport has Av Gas and Jet A available from Westernair. The newly built Western Executive Jet Center has big screen TV, executive style bathrooms, conference rooms, pilot lounges, passenger area, delicatessen, and a VIP lounge.
