It is named after pioneer Simpson Newland, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century South Australia. Newland is a village and civil parish on the north-eastern edge of Malvern Link, Worcestershire, England, on the A449 road. The village lies on the edge of the 6.5 hectare Newland Common, which is protected by the Malvern Hills Conservators and is centred on the traditional English Swan Inn public house. Adjacent to the Swan is a cricket field run as part oBarnards Green Cricket Club Both the Swan and the cricket field are owned by the Trustees of the Madresfield Estate - a large local landowner. Newland is a town in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 698 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Avery County. History Before its founding, the area was known as "Old Fields of Toe". It was an early muster ground in the campaign against Indians and before the Battle of Kings Mountain. On November 9, 1783 the land was granted to Colonel Waightstill Avery. The name comes from the legend of Estatoe, pronounced 'S - ta - toe', about an Indian chief's daughter who fell in love with a warrior of a rival tribe. Because their love could never be accepted by either's families, they jumped from a precipice into the depths of a nearby river. In an alternative version, their love caused a bloody war between the tribes and Estatoe crafted a peace pipe with two stems in which both chiefs could smoke at once. Newland with Woodhouse Moor is a civil parish in the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England, consisting of some open countryside west of Normanton, including Newland Hall. The records of the Newlands estate go back 900 years, and indicate that it was established in 1213 by King John I as a community of the Knights Templar, and subsequently fell to the Knights Hospitaller, who maintained a preceptory there. Newland was only one of two preceptories in West Yorkshire, the other being that of the Knights Templar at Temple Newsam, and the only one established by the Knights Hospitaller. Early in its history, the preceptory was the beneficiary of the largesse of a powerful patron, Roger Le Peytevin, lord of the manor of nearby Altofts. Newland Park is a Grade II listed country house and estate near the village of Chalfont St Peter in Buckinghamshire. History Henry Gott bought Newland Park in c. 1770 where he entertained King George III, and, in 1785, erected an obelisk called Gott's Monument to commemorate the death of a stag killed during a hunt with the king. The estate was purchased by Thomas Allen in 1809 after Gott's death, and was inherited by his son Thomas Newland Allen on his death in 1829. Mrs Edmund Stevens, Allen's daughter, inherited Newland Park on her father's death in 1898, and sold the estate to Henry Andrade Harben in 1903. The gardens were designed by Thomas Hayton Mawson in 1903.
