New Taiwanese Song
New Taiwanese Song is a genre of Taiwanese popular music. It was first used to describe pop songs, often dealing with political themes or social criticism, that followed the History of Taiwan#Democratic_reforms, upheavals of 1989. ''Songs of Madness'' by Blacklist Studio was one of the first and most prominent releases in this genre. Chen Ming-chang, Lim Giong, and New Formosa Band are other major musicians in this realm. History Of Taiwan
The history of the island of Taiwan dates back tens of thousands of years to the earliest known evidence of human habitation. The sudden appearance of a culture based on agriculture around 3000 BC is believed to reflect the arrival of the ancestors of today's Taiwanese indigenous peoples. From the late 13th to early 17th centuries, Han Chinese gradually came into contact with Taiwan and started settling there. Named Formosa by Portuguese explorers, the south of the island was colonized by the Dutch in the 17th century whilst the Spanish built a settlement in the north which lasted until 1642. These European settlements were followed by an influx of Hoklo and Hakka immigrants from the Fujian and Guangdong areas of mainland China, across the Taiwan Strait. Blacklist Studio () was a group of Taiwanese musicians who came together and released a ground-breaking album in 1989 called ''Songs of Madness'' (). Reportedly five years in the making, this work came out at a critical juncture in Taiwan's history, two years after the lifting of the decades-long martial law. The album was critical in the formation of the genre known as New Taiwanese Song. Its members included Wang Ming Hui (), Chen Ming Chang (), Lin Wei Zhe(). The first album's notes reveal the seriousness with which the group assessed its own role in Taiwan's musical development. They believed that Taiwanese music ought to reflect the times, that it was important for the new generations to "correctly" see the relationship between the mother tongue and themselves. Chen Ming-chang (陳明章) (born July 4, 1956) is a Taiwanese folk singer, guitarist, Taiwanese yueqin player, composer, and producer born in Beitou. He is known for writing scores for the Hou Hsiao-Hsien films ''Dust in the Wind'' (1985) and '' The Puppetmaster'' (1993), as well as for songs such as "She Is Our Darling" (伊是咱的寶貝, 1993) and "Wandering to Tamsui" (流浪到淡水, 1995). He is stylistically known for singing primarily in Taiwanese Hokkien, incorporating traditional styles and instruments into his music, as well as songs that represent the Taiwanese underclass. Lim Giong
Lim Giong (; born 7 June 1964) is a Taiwanese musician, DJ, actor, and an active figure in the Taiwanese experimental electronic music scene. He is known for recording rock songs in Taiwanese Hokkien, starting with his first hit song "Marching Forward" in 1990. He is also known as writing film scores for directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien, Jia Zhangke, and Bi Gan. His has received numerous awards for his work, including the Cannes Soundtrack Award in 2015 for '' The Assassin''. Early life Lim was born in Changhua, later moving to Taichung where his parent ran a small food stall. New Formosa Band () is a Taiwanese pop music ensemble. Its members include Bobby Chen and Ayugo Huang. The group was established in 1992 and are important musicians in the genres of Hakka and New Taiwanese Song. They released several albums in the 1990s which blended traditional Taiwanese folk music with pop elements.
