New South Head Road, Sydney
New South Head Road, is a major road in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, linking the inner-eastern suburb of Rushcutters Bay to the southern reaches of the South Head peninsula. Route New South Head Road runs north-east from Rushcutters Bay through Edgecliff, Double Bay, Point Piper, Rose Bay and Vaucluse where it finally merges into Old South Head Road. History Maroo track Prior to the road's construction the main route to the southern headland was South Head Road, which led to the signal station following the route of modern-day Old South Head Road and Oxford Street. In 1831, construction began on New South Head Road. The road was to follow the route of the Aboriginal foot track ''Maroo'', which contoured between south head and Sydney. William Street is a major thoroughfare in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The street was named in honour of King William IV and was gazetted in 1834. Route and features The street's eastern terminus is located on the boundary between Kings Cross, Rushcutters Bay and at the street's junction with Barcom Avenue, Bayswater Road and New South Head Road. City2Surf (or City to Surf) is a popular road running event held annually in Sydney covering a course. The event is a "fun run" as well as a race, attracting both competitive runners and community participants who can choose to run or to walk. The event attracts more than 80,000 entrants who start in staggered groups based on previous running times and early entry. History The City2Surf has been held as an annual event since the first run on 5 September 1971, initially as a run that commenced in George Street, adjacent to Sydney Town Hall. Rose Bay ferry wharf is located on the southern side of Sydney Harbour serving the Sydney suburb of Rose Bay. History On 23 March 1970, Stannard Brothers commenced operating a service to Circular Quay. On the same date its Mosman to Double Bay service was rerouted to Rose Bay. The former is now operated by Sydney Ferries, while the latter which primarily operated to service private schools in the area and was being operated by Rosman Ferries ceased in December 2003 after the State Government withdrew funding. In September 2012, a new wharf opened to the east with the older wharf retained for other craft to use. Edgecliff Railway Station
Edgecliff railway station is located on the Eastern Suburbs line, serving the Sydney suburb of Edgecliff. It is served by Sydney Trains T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line services and NSW TrainLink South Coast Line services. History Whilst the Eastern Suburbs Railway was not originally intended to travel via Edgecliff, the first proposal for an Edgecliff station was in 1947. In 1963 it was suggested that Edgecliff be the terminus of the first stage of the railway, but by 1967 it was decided Bondi Junction was a better terminus location. Edgecliff station opened on 23 June 1979 when the Eastern Suburbs line opened from Central to Bondi Junction.
