New Denver, British Columbia
New Denver is at the mouth of Carpenter Creek, on the east shore of Slocan Lake, in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The village is west of Kaslo on Highway 31A, and southeast of Nakusp and northeast of Slocan on Highway 6. Name origin In 1892, the town was mostly called Slocan City or Slocan for about a month, Eldorado City or Eldorado for about seven months, and New Denver since. However, these names were used interchangeably for months. Furthermore, the place may have been known as Carpenter Creek townsite after its founding in 1891. Appearing about the same time as the Slocan community at the foot of the lake, it is unclear why the latter prevailed in keeping the name. Nakusp
The Village of Nakusp (Sinixt ''neqo'sp'') is beside the mouth of Kuskanax Creek, on the Upper Arrow Lake in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Lying between the Selkirk and Monashee ranges, the village is known for its nearby hot springs and picturesque mountain lakeside setting. First Nations peoples and European explorers The Secwepemc, Sinixt and Ktunaxa peoples occupied the region for thousands of years. In 1811, Finan McDonald, a member of David Thompson's party, was the first reported European explorer on the Arrow Lakes. The settlement name came from the Nakusp Creek to the south. Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre
Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre is a museum that preserves and interprets one of ten Canadian concentration camps where more than 27,000 Japanese Canadians were incarcerated by the Canadian government during and after World War II (1942 to 1949). The centre was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2007. Description The museum is open seasonally from 1 May to 30 September. The site consists of five buildings, of which three are original shacks built to house the interned. Sandon is in the foothills of the Selkirk Mountains in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Rosebery, British Columbia
Rosebery is an unincorporated community about north of New Denver in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former steamboat landing and ferry terminal is at the mouth of Wilson Creek on the eastern shore of Slocan Lake. The locality, on BC Highway 6, is about by road north of Castlegar and by road and ferry south of Revelstoke. Name origin Wilson Creek, the former name, came from the creek flowing through the hamlet. The naming honoured either John Wilson, a resident until about 1902, or Arthur M. Wilson, the Slocan's first justice of the peace, who staked land at the creek in 1891, and left in the late 1890s. The Slocan Trading and Navigation Co. (ST&N) steamboat ''Wm. Lemon Creek, British Columbia
Lemon Creek is an unincorporated community on the east side of the Slocan River in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The locality is on BC Highway 6 about south of Slocan, and north of Castlegar. Townsites The settlement was named after the creek, which recognized Robert E. Lemon, a prominent Nelson merchant. In 1892, a substantial bridge was built across the creek, as part of the trail up the Slocan Valley. At the time, the naming of the creek likely acknowledged Lemon's contribution toward funding the project. In 1896, a townsite was staked at the mouth of the creek. The next year, about a mile up the creek, another settlement with a hotel was established. Named Del Monte, it was the place at which the proposed railway line was expected to cross.
