National Scala
National Scala was an entertainment venue opposite Tivoli Gardens on Vesterbrogade in Copenhagen, Denmark. The building was later converted into a shopping centre and demolished in 2013. History Background The building's history can be traced back to a pavilion built by Kongens Klub ("King's Club") some 200 metre further to the west in 1846. It was dismantled when the Zealand Railway Company constructed Copenhagen's new central station, in 1864, and rebuilt on the corner of Vester Farimagsvej (now Axeltorv) and Vesterbro Passage (now Vesterbrogade). In 1872, a new owner changed its name to ''Café Boulevard ''. Etablissementet National In 1880, Hans Hansen, a well-known developer of the time, acquired the property. He commissioned Henrik Vilhelm Brinkopff to expand the complex and changed its name to Etablissementet National. Dagmar Julie Augusta Hansen (12 November 1871 – 13 April 1959), a Danish cabaret-singer and stage-performer, became a national sensation as Denmark's first "pin-up girl". Liva Weel
Olivia Marie Olsen (31 December 1897 – 22 May 1952), nicknamed Liva Weel, was a Danish singer, comedian, and actress. Although she was trained in classical singing, her signature songs and performances were ballads. Upbringing Weel grew up in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, where she lived with her parents (detective Carlo Martin Ingomar Olsen and wife Marie Christine Dorthea Olivia Josephine Olsen) at the Mysundegade apartment on Istedgade street. At the age of 17, she began to train her voice with opera singer and music educator Hedevig Quiding (16 September 1867 - 22 October 1936). She also received singing training from Vilhelm Herold. Her first performance was in 1917 at a tea party arranged by Hedevig Quiding. She later committed to singing duties at Revues in theatres at Odder Municipality and Nykøbing Falster. Harry Houdini (, born Erik Weisz; March 24, 1874 – October 31, 1926) was a Hungarian-American escape artist, magic man, and stunt performer, noted for his escape acts. His pseudonym is a reference to his spiritual master, French magician Robert-Houdin (1805–1871). Hans Christian Lumbye
Hans Christian Lumbye (; 2 May 1810 – 20 March 1874) was a Danish composer of waltzes, polkas, mazurkas and galops, among other things. Beginnings As a child, he studied music in Randers and Odense, and by age 14 he was playing the trumpet in a military band. In 1829, he joined the Horse Guards in Copenhagen, still continuing his music education. In 1839, he heard a Viennese orchestra play music by Johann Strauss I, after which he composed in the style of Strauss, eventually earning the nickname "The Strauss of the North". Career From 1843 to 1872, he served as the music director and in-house composer for Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen. Such was his popularity in the Danish capital that many Danes revered him and considered Johann Strauss II as the "Lumbye of the South".
