National Human Rights Museum
The National Human Rights Museum is a national museum of Taiwan (Republic of China) with locations in New Taipei City (Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park) and Green Island (Green Island White Terror Memorial Park). The museum was established on March 15, 2018, and opened on May 18, 2018. The museum has collections of documents, research and educational materials relating to the period of martial law in Taiwan and works with museums in Taiwan and internationally. Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park
The Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park () is a museum in Xindian District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. History The building used to serve as a military school from 1957 to 1967. It later housed military courts and a detention center called the Jingmei Military Detention Center () for political dissidents during the White Terror period. Former prisoners in the detention center include Annette Lu, Chen Chu and Shih Ming-teh. In 1991, the center was closed. In 2007, the center was turned into a human rights memorial and museum featuring Taiwan's democracy movement at the suggestion of Vice President Annette Lu. In early April 2009, the Council for Cultural Affairs changed the name of the site to Jing-Mei Human Rights Memorial and Cultural Park. Green Island White Terror Memorial Park
The Green Island White Terror Memorial Park () is a memorial park in Green Island, Taitung County, Taiwan to commemorate the victims of the White Terror. History The area used to be the shelter area during the Japanese rule. After martial law in Taiwan was declared in May 1949, many political dissidents were imprisoned on Green Island at Taiwan Lyudao Prison by the government which was built in 1951. Over time, the prisons came to symbolize political suppression. In February 1970, Taiyuan Incident took place as one of an attempt for Taiwan independence movement. Soon the Ministry of National Defense constructed the second prison. Upon its completion, the ministry transferred all of political prisoners throughout Taiwan to this new prison named the Institute of Reform and Training, which was then later renamed to Oasis Villa. Xindian District
Xindian District () is an inner city district in the southern part of New Taipei City, Taiwan. Name Xindian's name originated during the Qing Dynasty close to 300 years ago. According to legend, a person named Lin and others came from Quanzhou, Fujian Province. On a mountain road leading to Wulai, they built a small cabin and opened a store selling groceries for the exchange of goods with mountain aborigines. Since the store had no formal name, travelers called it ''Sintiam'' (). An area usually not considered as part of Xindian is ''Ankeng'' (), although it is within the jurisdiction of the district, located in a valley on the west side of the Xindian Creek. New Taipei City is a special municipality located in northern Taiwan. Green Island, also known by other names, is a small volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean about off the eastern coast of Taiwan. It is at high tide and at low tide, making it the seventh-largest island in Taiwan Area. Martial law in Taiwan () refers to the periods in the history of Taiwan after World War II during control by the Republic of China Armed Forces of the Kuomintang-led Government of the Republic of China regime. The term is specifically used to refer to the over 38-year-long consecutive martial law period between 20 May 1949 and 14 July 1987, which was qualified as "the longest imposition of martial law by a regime anywhere in the world" at that time (having since been surpassed by Syria.).
