Green Island White Terror Memorial Park
The Green Island White Terror Memorial Park () is a memorial park in Green Island, Taitung County, Taiwan to commemorate the victims of the White Terror. History The area used to be the shelter area during the Japanese rule. After martial law in Taiwan was declared in May 1949, many political dissidents were imprisoned on Green Island at Taiwan Lyudao Prison by the government which was built in 1951. Over time, the prisons came to symbolize political suppression. In February 1970, Taiyuan Incident took place as one of an attempt for Taiwan independence movement. Soon the Ministry of National Defense constructed the second prison. Upon its completion, the ministry transferred all of political prisoners throughout Taiwan to this new prison named the Institute of Reform and Training, which was then later renamed to Oasis Villa. Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park
The Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park () is a museum in Xindian District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. History The building used to serve as a military school from 1957 to 1967. It later housed military courts and a detention center called the Jingmei Military Detention Center () for political dissidents during the White Terror period. Former prisoners in the detention center include Annette Lu, Chen Chu and Shih Ming-teh. In 1991, the center was closed. In 2007, the center was turned into a human rights memorial and museum featuring Taiwan's democracy movement at the suggestion of Vice President Annette Lu. In early April 2009, the Council for Cultural Affairs changed the name of the site to Jing-Mei Human Rights Memorial and Cultural Park.
