Naboløs
Naboløs (literally "Without Neighbours") is a short street in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark. All six properties in the street date from the rebuilding of the city in the years after the Copenhagen Fire of 1795 and have been added to the Danish registry of protected buildings and places. Together with Hyskenstræde it provides a direct link between the shopping street Strøget and the metro station at Gammel Strand. History In the Middle Ages the street was considered part of Hyskenstræde. In the 16th century it became known under various names. In 1551 it is thus referred to as "that street where Niels Tommesen lives" (""thet strede som Niels Tommesen wdi boer") and in 1604 as Vejerhusstræde (Weighhouse Street) after the weigh house (vejerboden) which had been built at Gammel Strand in 1581. Naboløs 2 / Kompagnistræde 1 is a Neoclassical architecture, Neoclassical property situated at the corner of Naboløs (No. 2) and Strædet, Kompagnistræde (No. 1) in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is one of a substantial number of similar apartment buildings constructed by the master masons Philip Lange and Lauritz Thrane as part of the rebuilding of the city following the Copenhagen Fire of 1795. It was listed in the Listed buildings in Copenhagen Municipality, Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1945. History 18th century The property was in 1689 as No. 58 in Snaren's Quarter owned by ropemaker Carsten Carstensen. In 1756, it was as No. 57 owned by carpenter Christen Olsen. The property was in 1787 home to a total of 30 people distributed on five households. It was owned by merchant (''urtekræmmer'') Lars Wiliken Hornemann (1734-1808). Hans Christian Ondrup
Hans Christian Ondrup (1751-1814), usually referred to as H.C. Ondrup, was a Danish master builder, stucco artist and porcelain painter. He constructed a number of buildings in Copenhagen in the 1780s and 1800s, most of which have now been listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places. Biography Ondrup was born in Copenhagen. He worked as a porcelain painter at the Royal Porcelain Manufactury in 1667 and completed an apprenticeship as a stucco artist in 1779. He became a member of the Masons' Guild in 1783 and became a master mason in 1789. Hyskenstræde
Hyskenstræde is a street in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark. It runs from the pedestrian street Strøget (Vimmelskaftet) in the northwest to Kompagnistræde in the southeast from where it continues as Naboløs for another block to Gammel Strand. History The name is derived from the German word ''Häuschen'', meaning "Small Houses", a reference to the public toilets that were located on piles in the water at the far end of the street. One of the two public toilets, Østre Mag (Eastern "Mag", mag being another word for public toilet, cf. Magstræde).), was located in front of the street. In c. 1600, the street became known as Lasse Winders Stræde after city councilor Lars "Vinner" Nielsen. Copenhagen Fire Of 1728
The Copenhagen Fire of 1728 was the largest fire in the history of Copenhagen, Denmark. It began on the evening of 20 October 1728 and continued to burn until the morning of 23 October. It destroyed approximately 28% of the city (measured by counting the number of destroyed lots from the cadastre) and left 20% of the population homeless. The reconstruction lasted until 1737. No less than 47% of the section of the city, which dates back to the Middle Ages, was completely lost, and along with the Copenhagen Fire of 1795, it is the main reason that few traces of medieval Copenhagen can be found in the modern city. Although the number of dead and wounded was relatively low compared to the extent of the fire, the cultural losses were huge. Copenhagen Fire Of 1795
The Copenhagen Fire of 1795 (''Københavns brandes 1795'') started on Friday, 5 June 1795, at or around 3 pm by the Navy's old base south east of Kongens Nytorv on Gammelholm, in the Navy's magazine for coal and timber, the so-called Dellehave. As the workers had already gone home, a considerable length of time passed before efforts to combat the fire started, and out of fear for theft, the fire hydrants had been removed. The people of Holmen also blocked the civilian fire brigade, possibly in the belief that since it was a military area, the military should take care of it. There had been an extended period without rain and the dry wood, combined with the storage of rope work and tar, made the fire spread quickly. The wind blew especially strong from east-southeast, and that meant the countless embers were carried through the air into the city.
