NSWGR Steam Locomotive Classification
In the first 36 years of its existence, the NSW Railways introduced 42 separate classes of locomotives. New South Wales E17 Class Locomotive
The E.17 class was a class of patent long boiler steam locomotive built by the Robert Stephenson and Company for the New South Wales Government Railways of Australia. History In the 1860s, rail construction in New South Wales was intensifying, with the Main South and Main West mainlines being extended to Goulburn and Bathurst respectively. Grades along this route were up to 1 in 30 (3.3%) steep. As a result, it was obvious that a heavy goods engine would be needed to carry cargo along these lines. These locomotives were based on Stephenson's patent long boiler engines of 1843 for the York and North Midland Railway. The first order, for six locomotives, was built by Robert Stephenson and Company, and these engines would be placed in service in 1865–7 on the Main South and Main West lines for goods workings. New South Wales X10 Class Locomotive
The X10 class is a class of steam locomotives previously operated by the New South Wales Government Railways of Australia. History When the NSWGR steam locomotive classification was renumbered in 1924, a number of smaller classes, including small 0-4-0 and 2-4-0 tank locomotives, all types of duplicates, yard and depot locomotives, crane locomotives, locomotive and accident cranes and special equipment were classified as the X10 class. Many were purchased from other government agencies and private lines. As such, this was an extremely diverse group of locomotives. New South Wales M36 Class Locomotive
The M36 class (X10 class post 1924) was a class of steam locomotives built for the New South Wales Government Railways in Australia. History In the late 1860s, four more of the 1 class where manufactured by Mort's Dock Sydney in 1870-71. Another four locomotives of the M.36 class were manufactured at Eveleigh Railway Workshops in 1876-77 using re-built tenders from Locomotive No.1-4. Two of the class later had cab shelters fitted to the tenders for suburban running.
