Lygaeidae
The Lygaeidae are a family in the Hemiptera (true bugs), with more than 110 genera in four subfamilies. The family is commonly referred to as seed bugs, and less commonly, milkweed bugs, or ground bugs. However, while many of the species feed on seeds, some feed on sap ( mucivory) or seed pods, others are omnivores and a few, such as the wekiu bug, are carnivores that feed exclusively on insects. Insects in this family are distributed across the world, including throughout North America. Nysius
''Nysius'' is a genus of false chinch bugs in the family Lygaeidae. At least 100 described species are placed in ''Nysius''. Like other seed bugs, some species in the genus have proven to be crop pests of wheat and other grains (including ''N. huttoni''), as well as many vegetables. A unique Hawaiian radiation of the genus contains almost a quarter of the world's species (26), as well as the most diverse character set seen in the genus. In addition, two closely related species (colloquially known as wēkiu bugs) found on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the island of Hawai'i, are different from the rest of ''Nysius'' by exhibiting reduced nonfunctional wings, and feed on dead and dying insects ('' N. wekiuicola'', '' N. aa'' ). Mauna Loa
Mauna Loa ( or ; Hawaiian: ; en, Long Mountain) is one of five volcanoes that form the Island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The largest subaerial volcano (as opposed to subaqueous volcanoes) in both mass and volume, Mauna Loa has historically been considered the largest volcano on Earth, dwarfed only by Tamu Massif. ''Nysius wekiuicola'' is a species of wēkiu bug (a type of seed bug in the genus ''Nysius'') endemic to the area surrounding the summit of Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii. It is closely related to ''Nysius aa'', which is endemic to the summit of the neighboring Mauna Loa. Description The wēkiu bug is flightless and inhabits the summit area of Mauna Kea, over .
