Nyankpala
Nyankpala is a town in the Tolon-Kumbungu District, about 10 miles south-west of Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region in north Ghana. The University for Development Studies (UDS) has a campus located in Nyankpala. This campus is the first of the university's four campuses, the first to be established in northern Ghana. Nyankpala is the hub for some important Government Institutions including the headquarters oSavanna Agricultural Research Institute(SARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an on-farm station of the Animal Research Institute (ARI), onfarm station of the Soil Research Institute. ThAvnash rice industryhas a plant located in the town. This research institutes has been visited occasionally by students and academics who are on educational tour. University For Development Studies
The University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana, Tamale was established in 1992 by the government of Ghana with a view to accelerating the development of the then 3 Northern Regions of Ghana (the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions). The late President Jerry Rawlings, Jerry John Rawlings played a crucial role in its founding as he used his prize money from World Food Prize of $50,000 as seed money for its founding. It was set up as a multi-campus institution. It is the fifth public university to be established in Ghana. This deviates from the usual practice of having universities with central campuses and administrations. It was created with the three northern regions of North Ghana in mind. Tamale (Dagbani : ), officially called Tamale Metropolitan Area is the capital city of the Northern Region of Ghana. The Northern Region is one of the sixteen regions of Ghana. It is located in the north of the country and was the largest of the sixteen regions, covering an area of 70,384 square kilometres or 31 percent of Ghana's area until December 2018 when the Savannah Region and North East Region were created from it.
