Nuremberg–Augsburg Railway
The Nuremberg–Augsburg railway is a 137 km long main line in the German state of Bavaria. Most of it follows two parts the historic Ludwig South-North Railway, one of the List of the first German railways to 1870, oldest lines in Germany. Today, even after the opening of the Nuremberg–Munich high-speed railway, high-speed line from Nuremberg to Munich via Ingolstadt, is still used for long-distance services. It is also used as a detour during closures of the high speed line for maintenance. Between Nuremberg and Roth bei Nürnberg, Roth Nuremberg S-Bahn, S-Bahn services run on the parallel Nuremberg–Roth railway, Nuremberg–Roth line. Passenger Rail Terminology
Various terms are used for passenger railway lines and equipment; the usage of these terms differs substantially between areas: Rapid transit A rapid transit system is an electric railway characterized by high speed (~) and rapid acceleration. It uses passenger railcars operating singly or in multiple unit trains on fixed rails. It operates on separate rights-of-way from which all other vehicular and foot traffic are excluded (i.e. is fully grade-separated from other traffic). It uses sophisticated signaling systems, and high platform loading. Nuremberg–Roth Railway
The Nuremberg–Roth railway is a long main line railway in the German state of Bavaria, running from Nuremberg via Schwabach to Roth. It was built parallel with the Nuremberg–Augsburg railway during the first construction phase of the Nuremberg S-Bahn and opened on 9 June 2001. History The first demands for an S-Bahn network in greater Nuremberg were made in 1966. Deutsche Bundesbahn made a step in this direction in 1969 with the increase in services on the main lines during peak hour. The line between Nuremberg and Rothenburg was included in this, but did not receive regular interval services because of the dense traffic on the line. This service had to be withdrawn in the following years for operational reasons and also because of poor patronage, but Deutsche Bundesbahn still sought an improvement in services. DB Class 120
The DB Baureihe 120 is a class of electric locomotives operated by DB Fernverkehr in Germany. From 5 July 2020, almost all locomotives (except for one from the 120.2 subseries) have been withdrawn. A flying junction or flyover is a railway junction at which one or more diverging or converging tracks in a multiple-track route cross other tracks on the route by bridge to avoid conflict with other train movements. A more technical term is "grade-separated junction". A burrowing junction or dive-under occurs where the diverging line passes below the main line. The alternative to grade separation is a level junction or flat junction, where tracks cross at grade, and conflicting routes must be protected by interlocked signals. Ingolstadt–Treuchtlingen Railway
The Ingolstadt-Treuchtlingen Railway, also known as the Altmühlbahn (Altmühl Railway) is a railway line in the German state of Bavaria. The two-track line carries local services and freight from Ingolstadt Hauptbahnhof, Ingolstadt through the Altmühl valley to Treuchtlingen station, Treuchtlingen. History The history of the Altmühl Railway starts in 1833, when the former politician and economist Friedrich List unveiled his plans for a Germany-wide railway network. Even then he envisaged a direct connection from Munich via Ingolstadt to Nuremberg. Treuchtlingen
Treuchtlingen is a town in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district, in Bavaria, Germany. It has a population of around 12,000. History The spot where the town is situated was first settled by Celts, Romans and Franks. The town proper was founded in 793, during the reign of Charlemagne, and it was first mentioned in 899, as ''Drutelinga''. In the 12th century the castle was erected. In 1495 Treuchtlingen was burnt down. In 1869 the train station was opened. On 23 February 1945 at 11:00 clock an air raid on the station Treuchtlingen (Operation Clarion) took place, in which the Fronturlauberzug SF 2046 just stopped. The passengers of the train fled into the platform underpass, which received a direct hit.300 people died in the platform underpass, a total of nearly 600 people were killed and another 900 injured in the station and the surrounding area.
