Nunn (crater)
Nunn is a lunar impact crater that is located just beyond the eastern limb of the Moon, along the northern edge of Mare Smythii. It was named after American engineer Joseph Nunn. To the east of this crater is the much larger Babcock, and to the northwest is Jansky. This is a circular, bowl-shaped crater with some impact wear along the northwestern rim and to a lesser degree along the southeastern edge. The remainder of the crater perimeter is relatively free of erosion, and the edge is well-defined. The darker-hued interior floor is about half the crater diameter, and is level and almost featureless. Apollo 16
Apollo 16 (April 1627, 1972) was the tenth crewed mission in the United States Apollo space program, administered by NASA, and the fifth and penultimate to land on the Moon. It was the second of Apollo's " J missions", with an extended stay on the lunar surface, a focus on science, and the use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). The landing and exploration were in the Descartes Highlands, a site chosen because some scientists expected it to be an area formed by volcanic action, though this proved to not be the case. The mission was crewed by Commander John Young, Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke and Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly. Joseph Nunn
Joseph Nunn (1905–1968) was an American engineer. In 1956 he worked in collaboration with Dr. James G. Baker to design and manufacture a series of satellite tracking cameras. These were called Baker-Nunn cameras after their designers, and consisted of a very precise tracking system combined with an unusually large, wide-field camera for photographing large areas of the sky. Joseph Nunn was responsible for designing the mechanical elements of these cameras, while Dr. Baker worked on the camera. The optics were fabricated by the Perkin-Elmer Corporation, and the camera was assembled by Boller and Chivens. This camera provided tracking data on the Soviet Union's Sputnik I satellite. An STP network of the 12 cameras were built by August 1958. The cameras remained in operation until 1991, when they were decommissioned. Mare Smythii
Mare Smythii (Latin for "Smyth's Sea") is a lunar mare located along the equator on the easternmost edge of the Moon's near side. It is named for the 19th-century British astronomer William Henry Smyth. The Smythii basin where the mare is located is of the Pre-Nectarian epoch, while the surrounding features are of the Nectarian system. It is contained within a minimal diameter of , and has been excavated to a depth of . The mare material, which makes up the floor of the mare, is a low alumina basalt, and consists of Upper Imbrian basalt covered by Eratosthenian basalt. Babcock (crater)
Babcock is a lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon. It was named after American astronomer Harold D. Babcock. It lies on the northeastern edge of Mare Smythii, to the southeast of Mare Marginis. To the south of Babcock is the crater Purkynĕ, and to the east-northeast lies Erro. Babcock is located in a region of the Moon's surface that is occasionally brought into view during favorable librations, although it is seen from the edge and so little detail can be discerned from an observer on the Earth. The rim of Babcock has been eroded, notched and modified by subsequent impacts, leaving a somewhat irregular and uneven outer rim. Jansky (crater)
Jansky is a lunar impact crater that lies along the eastern limb of the Moon. It was named after American physicist Karl Jansky. It lies due east of the larger walled plain Neper, along the southern edge of the Mare Marginis. Due to its location, this crater is viewed from the side from Earth, limiting the amount of detail that can be observed. The visibility is also affected by libration, which can completely conceal this formation from view. This is a worn crater with an eroded rim. The southern part of the rim in particular is disrupted and irregular in form, with a pair of small craters along the inner wall. The remainder of the rim is roughly circular. The interior floor is relatively featureless, except for a few small craters.
