Nukuhiva Marquesan Warbler
''Nukuhiva'' is a genus of spiders with a single species, ''Nukuhiva adamsoni'', that occurs only on the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. It is in the wolf spider family, Lycosidae. It has been found on Nuku Hiva and on Ua Huka, a smaller island about to the east. Taxonomy The genus was first described by Lucien Berland in 1935 and is named after the island Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Berland named several genera after islands in the Pacific Ocean during the 1930s. Other names derived from islands in the Marquesas are '' Uapou'' and ''Uahuka''. It was originally included in the family Pisauridae Nursery web spiders (Pisauridae) is a family of Araneomorphae, araneomorph spiders first described by Eugène Simon in 1890. They resemble wolf spiders (Lycosidae) except for several key differences. Wolf spiders have two very prominent eyes in ad ..., though the shape of the male and female genitalia place it in the family Lycosidae (subfamily Lycosinae). References ...

Spider
Spiders ( order Araneae) are air-breathing arthropods that have eight legs, chelicerae with fangs generally able to inject venom, and spinnerets that extrude silk. They are the largest order of arachnids and rank seventh in total species diversity among all orders of organisms. Spiders are found worldwide on every continent except for Antarctica, and have become established in nearly every land habitat. , 50,356 spider species in 132 families have been recorded by taxonomists. However, there has been debate among scientists about how families should be classified, with over 20 different classifications proposed since 1900. Anatomically, spiders (as with all arachnids) differ from other arthropods in that the usual body segments are fused into two tagmata, the cephalothorax or prosoma, and the opisthosoma, or abdomen, and joined by a small, cylindrical pedicel, however, as there is currently neither paleontological nor embryological evidence that spiders ever had ...

Marquesas Islands
The Marquesas Islands (; french: Îles Marquises or ' or '; Marquesan: ' ( North Marquesan) and ' ( South Marquesan), both meaning "the land of men") are a group of volcanic islands in French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the southern Pacific Ocean. Their highest point is the peak of Mount Oave (french: Mont Oave, links=no) on Ua Pou island, at 1,230 m (4,035 ft) above sea level. Archaeological research suggests the islands were colonized in the 10th century AD by voyagers from West Polynesia. Over the centuries that followed, the islands have maintained a "remarkably uniform culture, biology and language". The Marquesas were named after the 16th century Spanish Viceroy of Peru, the Marquis of Cañete ( es, Marqués de Cañete, italic=unset) by navigator , who visited them in 1595. The Marquesas Islands constitute one of the five administrative divisions (') of French Polynesia. The capital of the Marquesas Islands' administrative subdivision is t ...

Wolf Spider
Wolf spiders are members of the family Lycosidae (). They are robust and agile hunters with excellent eyesight. They live mostly in solitude, hunt alone, and do not spin webs. Some are opportunistic hunters, pouncing upon prey as they find it or chasing it over short distances; others wait for passing prey in or near the mouth of a burrow. Wolf spiders resemble nursery web spiders (family Pisauridae), but wolf spiders carry their egg sacs by attaching them to their spinnerets, while the Pisauridae carry their egg sacs with their chelicerae and pedipalps. Two of the wolf spider's eight eyes are large and prominent; this distinguishes them from nursery web spiders, whose eyes are all of roughly equal size. This can also help distinguish them from the similar-looking grass spiders. Description The many genera of wolf spiders range in body size (legs not included) from less than . They have eight eyes arranged in three rows. The bottom row consists of four small eyes, the middle ro ...

Nuku Hiva
Nuku Hiva (sometimes spelled Nukahiva or Nukuhiva) is the largest of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, an overseas country of France in the Pacific Ocean. It was formerly also known as ''Île Marchand'' and ''Madison Island''. Herman Melville wrote his book ''Typee'' based on his experiences in the Taipivai valley in the eastern part of Nuku Hiva. Robert Louis Stevenson's first landfall on his voyage on the ''Casco'' was at Hatihe'u, on the north side of the island, in 1888. Geography Coast Western Nuku Hiva is characterized by a steep but fairly regular coastline, indented occasionally by small bays, leading to deep valleys, which in turn lead into the interior. There are no villages on the western side. The coastline of the eastern part of the island has few places to land by sea and takes the brunt of the ocean swells. The northern side, in contrast, is indented by deep bays, the largest of which are Anahō and Hatihe'u. A third bay, 'A'akapa, is smaller and li ...

Ua Huka
Ua Huka is one of the Marquesas Islands, in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. It is situated in the northern group of the archipelago, approximately to the east of Nuku Hiva, at . Name Ua Huka is sometimes also found spelled ''Roohka'' or ''Ua Huna''. The first Western navigator to sight the island was U.S. Navy Captain Joseph Ingraham in 1791. He named the island "Washington Island" in honor of U.S. President George Washington, a name which was eventually extended to include all of the northern group of the Marquesas Islands. Other names for the island include ''Riou'' and ''Solide''. ''See also Names of the Marquesas Islands''. The spider genus ''Uahuka'' is named after this island. History Although Ua Huka is located in the northern Marquesas, historically, culturally and linguistically the island's tribes were far more closely aligned with the southern Marquesas Islands, especially with the tribes from Pepane, in the eastern hal ...

Pacific Ocean
The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth's five oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, to Antarctica) in the south, and is bounded by the continents of Asia and Oceania in the west and the Americas in the east. At in area (as defined with a southern Antarctic border), this largest division of the World Ocean—and, in turn, the hydrosphere—covers about 46% of Earth's water surface and about 32% of its total surface area, larger than Earth's entire land area combined .Pacific Ocean

Uapou
''Uapou'' is a monotypic genus of South Pacific sheet weaver spiders containing the single species, ''Uapou maculata''. It was first described by Lucien Berland in 1935, and is found on Ua Pou, one of the Marquesas Islands. It was transferred to the family Symphytognathidae by H. W. Levi in 1972, but this was rejected by Brignoli in 1980. The World Spider Catalog places it in the family Linyphiidae. Nomenclature The genus is named after the island Ua Pou on the Marquesas Islands. The describer, Lucien Berland, named several genera after islands in the Pacific Ocean during the 1930s, including ''Uahuka'' and '' Nukuhiva''. The species name is derived from Latin ''maculata'', meaning "spotted". See also * List of Linyphiidae species (Q–Z) This article lists all described species of the spider family Linyphiidae as of May 14, 2020, from Q to Z. Uahuka
''Uahuka'' is a genus of South Pacific sheet weavers endemic to the Marquesas Islands that was first described by Lucien Berland in 1935. It was transferred to the family Symphytognathidae in 1972, but the transfer was rejected in 1980. The genus is named after Ua Huka on the Marquesas Islands. It is one of several genera that Lucien Berland named after islands in the Pacific Ocean during the 1930s. Other names derived from islands in the Marquesas are '' Uapou'' and '' Nukuhiva''. The specific name of ''U. affinis'' is derived from the Latin ''affinis'', meaning "allied, related". ''Spinifrons'' translates to "spiny front". While both species call the Marquesas Islands group home, each is endemic to a specific island: ''U. spinifrons'' has only been found on Ua Huka and ''U. affinis'' has only been found on Hiva Oa With its , Hiva Oa is the second largest island in the Marquesas Islands, in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. Pisauridae
Nursery web spiders (Pisauridae) is a family of Araneomorphae, araneomorph spiders first described by Eugène Simon in 1890. They resemble wolf spiders (Lycosidae) except for several key differences. Wolf spiders have two very prominent eyes in addition to the other six, while a nursery web spider's eyes are all about the same size. Additionally, female nursery web spiders carry their egg sacs with their jaws and pedipalps instead of attaching them to their spinneret (spider), spinnerets as wolf spiders do. When the eggs are about to hatch, a female spider builds a nursery "tent", places her egg sac inside, and stands guard outside, hence the family's common name. Like the wolf spiders, however, the nursery web spiders are roaming hunters that don't use webs for catching prey. Species occur throughout the world except for extremely dry or cold environments, and are common just about everywhere. Many can walk on the surface of still bodies of water and may even dive beneath the surf ...
