Nueva Ocotepeque
Nueva Ocotepeque, with a population of 13,940 (2020 calculation), is the capital of the Ocotepeque Department of Honduras. It is situated in the north-south valley of the Lempa River, north of the El Salvador border, and east of the Guatemala border. Nueva Ocotopeque was settled in 1935 after the site of the former town of Ocotepeque was destroyed by flooding of the river. Ocotepeque is one of the 18 departments of Honduras, Central America, located in the West and bordering both El Salvador and Guatemala. It was formed in 1906 from part of Copán department. Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. The Lempa River ( es, Río Lempa) is a river in Central America. Geography Its sources are located in between the Sierra Madre and the Sierra del Merendón in southern Guatemala, near the town of Olopa. In Guatemala the river is called ''Río Olopa'' and flows southwards for before entering Honduras and changing its name to Lempa river at . The Football War ( es, La guerra del fútbol; colloquial: Soccer War), also known as the Hundred Hours' War or 100 Hour War, was a brief military conflict fought between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969. Existing tensions between the two countries coincided with rioting during a 1970 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The war began on 14 July 1969 when the Salvadoran military launched an attack against Honduras.
