Norwegian Genealogical Society
Norwegian Genealogical Society ( no, Norsk Slektshistorisk Forening, NSF) is a genealogical society in Oslo, Norway. It was founded on 22 October 1926 as the first exclusively Norwegian genealogical society. Among the founders were Stian Herlofsen Finne-Grønn, Christoffer Morgenstierne Munthe and Sigurd Segelcke Meidell. The two former had already published the periodical ''Norsk tidsskrift for genealogi, personalhistorie, biografi og litteraturhistorie'' since 1906; in 1927 the Norwegian Genealogical Society launched ''Norsk slektshistorisk tidsskrift'' as its official periodical. Their internal magazine is ''Genealogen''. The organization also runs a genealogical library. Oslo
Oslo ( , , or ; sma, Oslove) is the capital and most populous city of Norway. It constitutes both a county and a municipality. The municipality of Oslo had a population of in 2022, while the city's greater urban area had a population of in 2019, and the metropolitan area had an estimated population of in 2021. During the Viking Age the area was part of Viken. Oslo was founded as a city at the end of the Viking Age in 1040 under the name Ánslo, and established as a ''kaupstad'' or trading place in 1048 by Harald Hardrada. The city was elevated to a bishopric in 1070 and a capital under Haakon V of Norway around 1300. Personal unions with Denmark from 1397 to 1523 and again from 1536 to 1814 reduced its influence. Stian Herlofsen Finne-Grønn
Stian Herlofsen Finne-Grønn (31 August 1869 – 1 November 1963) was a Norwegian lawyer, archivist, genealogist and museum director. Biography He was born in the town of Risør in Aust-Agder, Norway. He was the son of engineer Samuel Grønn (1838–1898) and Jacobine Finne (1845–1912). In October 1900 he married Margrethe Borchgrevink (1873–1963), a daughter of Sofie Borchgrevink. They had the sons Hans Finne-Grønn, a painter, and Jørgen Finne-Grønn, an ambassador. He attended the Royal Drafting School (''Den Kongelige Tegneskole'') in Christiania (now Oslo) graduating examen artium in 1888. He worked as an assistant architect in Christianssand for several years. He graduated cand.jur. from Det Kongelige Frederiks Universitet (now University of Oslo) in 1899. Christoffer Morgenstierne Munthe
Christopher Morgenstierne Munthe 14 July 1875 – 21 December 1939) was a Norwegian civil servant, military officer and genealogist. Biography He was a born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of colonel and historian Hartvig Andreas Munthe (1845–1905). He was also a grandnephew of historian and cartographer Gerhard Munthe, a nephew of painter Gerhard Munthe, writer Margrethe Munthe and Major General Carl Oscar Munthe, and a first cousin of librarian Wilhelm Munthe and painter Lagertha Munthe. After graduating from the Norwegian Military College, he became a lieutenant in the Kristiansand Brigade. Later he joined the Field Artillery and became captain in 1911. He took a law degree in 1908, and then became a clerk with the magistrate at Romerike. He served as secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Defense in 1912 and from 1917 he was the bureau chief. Sigurd Segelcke Meidell
Sigurd Segelcke Meidell (20 February 1878 – 26 July 1968) was a Norwegian journalist, genealogist and novelist. Biography He was born in Bergen as a son of sea captain Hartvig Segelcke Meidell (1834–1902) and Malin Gohde (1847–1895). His father's family hailed from Kvinnherad, and his mother's family was Swedish. He was the brother of Fascist politician Birger Meidell. In August 1908 he married Nunne Thorbjørnsen (1885–1949). Meidell grew up in Hamar. He finished his secondary education in 1898, enrolled in law studies and graduated with the cand.jur. degree in 1905. From 1906 to 1908 he was a foreign affairs journalist and theatre critic in the newspaper ''Morgenbladet''. Halvdan Koht
Halvdan Koht (7 July 1873 – 12 December 1965) was a Norwegian historian and politician representing the Labour Party. Born in the north of Norway to a fairly distinguished family, he soon became interested in politics and history. Starting his political career in the Liberal Party, he switched to the Labour Party around the turn of the 20th century. He represented that party in the Bærum municipal council for parts of the interwar period. He was never elected a member of Parliament, but served nonetheless as Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1935 to 1940, as part of the government-in-exile following Germany's invasion of Norway. In the latter capacity he sought to preserve Norway's neutrality in the Second World War, a decision that garnered him political infamy. Growing discontentment with Koht's political decisions ultimately led to his exit from the cabinet. Theodor Bull
Theodor Bull (1870 – 1958) was a Norwegian businessperson and genealogist. He was born in Kristiania as a son of medical doctor Edvard Isak Hambro Bull (1845–1925). He was a brother of theatre director Johan Peter Bull, historian and politician Edvard Bull and literary professor Francis Bull. Through Edvard Bull he was the uncle of historian Edvard Bull. He was also a nephew of military officer Karl Sigwald Johannes Bull, grandnephew of Anders Sandøe Ørsted Bull, great-grandson of Georg Jacob Bull and great-great-grandson of Chief Justice Johan Randulf Bull. Wilhelm Munthe
Abraham Wilhelm Støren Munthe (20 October 1883 – 18 December 1965) was a Norwegian librarian and author. He worked at the University Library of Oslo from 1903 to 1953. Personal life Munthe was born in Oslo, Kristiania (now Oslo) as the son of Olaf Andreas Jens Wilhelm Munthe (1851-1914) and Helene Andrea Støren (1857-1939). In 1917, he married Jenny Hempel (1882–1975). Career Munthe finished his examen artium at Oslo Cathedral School, Kristiania Cathedral School in 1902. Otto Sverdrup Engelschiøn
Otto Sverdrup Engelschiøn (30 October 1902 – 8 May 1982) was a Norwegian marketer, businessperson, resistance member and genealogist. He was born in Kristiania as a son of consul-general Søren Dass Brodtkorb Sverdrup Engelschiøn (1867–1909) and Janka Hansen (1869–1935). In 1928 he married Gudrun Irgens Garmann. Engelschiøn finished his secondary education in 1922 and graduated from the Royal Frederick University with the cand.jur. degree in 1926. He was an attorney from 1927, and also director of I. Sverdrup Engelschiøn which had the rights to distribute Swedish Tomten products in Norway. In 1929 it was merged with Norsk Barnengens Tekniske Fabrik. Cornelius Severin Scheel Schilbred
Cornelius Severin Scheel Schilbred, often referred to as C. S. Schilbred (13 December 1906 – 10 April 1985) was a Norwegian genealogist, historian and educator. A school teacher and headmaster by occupation, he wrote extensively, and chaired the Norwegian Genealogical Society and the Norwegian Heraldry Society. Early life He was born in Eidanger as a son of Lieutenant Colonel Cornelius Mathias Schilbred (1878–1949) and Marie Henriette Petersen (1885–1965). In 1939 he married Margrethe Lomsdal (1908–2000).
